Elizabeth Ann Johnson, nee Stahly, affectionately known as Betty, passed away at the age of 98 in Portland, Oregon, on August 28, 2024. Born on October 23, 1925 in Portland, Oregon, Betty attended Holbrook Elementary School and Scappoose High School.
Betty was married to Oscar Lee Johnson on April 13, 1946 in Vancouver, Washington. Oscar and Betty became friends when the Stahly's would have folks over, including the Johnson's. She would recall having many get-togethers at their home in Scappoose. Oscar and Betty continued this tradition at their own home in Tigard, inviting family and friends for Saturday or Sunday dinners. She always made time for her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, taking them shopping downtown or at Washington Square, and yearly to the Grand Floral Parade. She was a kind, thoughtful person who always made time for others. Betty had beautiful cursive handwriting.
A skilled knitter, Betty crafted colorful dish rags, which she generously gifted to family, friends, neighbors, her doctors, her hairdresser- anyone who she thought needed one, and she would do so with a warm smile. It made her feel so good to give these away! She enjoyed shopping, and cooking; she made the best pot roast. She cooked up turkey dinners with all the fixings on Thanksgiving - including pumpkin pie! She made delicious homemade strawberry jam. She also made wonderful spanish rice and pineapple chicken - mmm!
Betty's professional life was marked by her dedication and versatility, having worked at Sherwood Cannery, Dickenson's Jams & Jellies, on-call at Metzger School Kitchen, and in quality control at G.A.F. Beyond her professional roles, Betty was a cherished mother and housewife. She was an active member of T.O.P.S club and volunteered at Metzger school carnivals and as a coffee & cookie server at the Wilsonville I-5 rest stop for Eastern Star.
Betty is survived by her sons, Garry Lee Johnson and Douglas Wayne Johnson; daughter, Crystal Ann Marshall; 10 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren, and 6 great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, Henry and Katherine Stahly.
Visitation will be held at Young's Funeral Home in Tigard, Oregon, on September 12, 2024, from 10 AM to 11 AM, followed by a service and reception. A graveside service at Crescent Grove Cemetery & Mausoleum will take place the same day at 2 PM. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to American Legion Post #158 in Tigard, OR, or Paralyzed Veterans of America to honor Betty's memory and her spirit of giving.
