We are saddened to announce the passing of our beloved mother, sister, Nana and friend, Dorothy Patricia Shelton. Dorothy passed away on March 3, 2020 at the age of 94, on the same date her daughter Mary passed away nine years ago.
Dorothy was born April 4, 1925 in Butte, Montana to Don and Rose Cronin. She was the 5th of 8 daughters. She attended St. John’s Grade School and Girl’s Central High School.
After graduation, Dorothy went to business school in Spokane, WA and became a comptometer operator. She began working at Texaco where she met the love of her life, William “Bill” N. Shelton. The two were married on June 17, 1947 and shared 67 beautiful years together.
Dorothy and Bill had 7 children, Mary, Bill, Donalee, Dorothy, Janice, Dan and Susanne. Even with a full house, Dorothy was always able to keep a spotless home and have dinner ready at 5pm. She was an excellent mom and a devoted wife, who loved her family fiercely and always put them first.
Once retired in Tigard, Dorothy loved being Nana to her 13 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren. She and Bill enjoyed weekly trips to Spirit Mountain Casino, where she never saw a slot machine she didn’t like! The two also took many road trips to Reno to visit Mary and her family and gamble at the Peppermill. Dorothy even enjoyed an occasional White Russian!
One of her greatest qualities was her sense of humor. She loved to make people laugh. Dorothy also enjoyed doing stitchery and needlepoint, riding her exercise bike, and completing the daily crossword puzzle and word jumble. She had a deep Catholic faith that guided her throughout her life. Her greatest heartaches were losing her daughters, Janice (1995) and Mary (2011) and her husband, Bill (2014).
Dorothy is survived by and will be greatly missed by her children, Bill Shelton (Linda), Dona Worsley (Bob), Dan Shelton (Theresa) of Tigard; Dorothy Hatala (Mark) and Susanne Walter (Steve) of Portland as well as her grandchildren Neal, Kevin and Steve Umphress, Ben and Jon Worsley, Max Hatala, Lindsey and David Rostal, Brittany and Brenda Shelton, Bonnie Shelton Beers and Maggie and Emily Walter; and her great grandchildren, Carter and Payton Umphress, Jacob and Maiya Umphress and JJ, Ellie and Andrew Worsley. She will also be dearly missed by her sister, Jean Cronin of Helena, MT.
A private Interment will be held at St. Anthony’s Cemetery in Tigard, Oregon where Dorothy will be placed with her beloved husband, Bill. A memorial gathering will be held at a later date.
