Darlene McLaughlin was the first of three daughters born to Andy and Laverne Semmen in North Dakota, December 4th, 1937. She was raised in Seaside Oregon, and graduated with honors from Seaside High. During her senior year, she married Richard “Mac” McLaughlin on February 23rd, 1956.
After marrying Richard, they traveled the world while serving in the Air Force for over 20 years. Their travels took them all over the world including places like Japan and Hawaii. During this time, Darlene had two boys and twin girls.
In 1976, she settled with the family in Tigard Oregon. Darlene went to work for JC Penny’s, and retired with over 22 years working for the company.
Darlene joined the American Legion Auxiliary in 1991 which began a long career of volunteer service to the organization. She quickly rose through the ranks of Unit 158 Auxiliary President, to Department of Oregon Auxiliary President. Darlene made many friends during her years of volunteering, and her accomplishments included national chairmanships. Her final position was National Western Division Vice President, an accomplishment she and her family are extremely proud of.
The family would like to thank the countless friends and family for their support and cards which she received on a daily basis. Your efforts did not go unnoticed.
Darlene passed away peacefully in her home on Tuesday, July 31, 2012. Darlene is survived by her husband of 56 years, Richard “Mac” McLaughlin. She is also survived by her sisters Shirley Cole and Leanne Collins, son Mike McLaughlin, son Richard McLaughlin, daughter Diane McLaughlin, daughter Linda McLaughlin, grandson’s Justin, Avory, Andrew, Sam and granddaughters Megan, Molly and Caitlin.
A viewing is scheduled from Noon to five, Tuesday August 7th at Young's Funeral Home in Tigard. Darlene’s services will be held on Wednesday, August 8th, 1:00 at Tigard United Methodist Church located at 9845 S.W. Walnut Court. A graveside service at Crescent Grove Cemetery 9925 S.W.Greenburg Road will follow. After, please join the family for a celebration of life at the Tigard American Legion, 8635 S.W. Scoffins Street. In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions are made to Unit 158, American Legion Auxiliary.
