Sarah was the fourth of eleven children born to Mary Grace and George Monroe Griggs. Six boys; George Jr, Benjamin, Don, Dan, Douglas, and Garth and five girls; Louise Holland, Sarah Tidwell, Willie Grace Peterson, Gladys Lyle, and Leola Williams. Of the eleven children only the youngest, Garth Madison, 84, of Ft. Worth, Texas is still living.
In 1927, when she was six, Sarah’s family moved from Marietta, GA to east Texas and moved often, her father following jobs, while she was growing up until finally settling in Gilmer, Texas.
Sarah graduated from Gilmer High School in 1939. In 1941 she married James Allen Scott. She and James (Jimmy) had two sons, Joe Allen and James Randle. In 1946 she and James divorced and she moved to Ft. Worth, TX where she met Claude Tidwell in 1950. Sarah and Claude were married on May 14, 1952 and stayed married until his death in 1996. Sarah and Claude had four children, Claudia, Duane, Emmett, and Dale.
After spending six years in Moab, Utah, and living in Northglenn, CO for many years they purchased 17 acres and built a house northeast of Brighton, CO, where they enjoyed their retirement years. Sarah loved living in the country, raising animals and gardening. A few years after Claude passed away in 1996 Sarah decided to sell the property and move back to the house she had kept in Northglenn where she lived until an accident caused her to move into Crossroads Assisted Living in 2017? While at Crossroads she still enjoyed her favorite past times, playing bingo, crocheting, and occasionally being able to attend the First Southern Baptist Church, where she had been a member since moving to Colorado in 1961. Sarah accepted the Lord as her Savior as a teenager. Being an active member of the church was always very important to her no matter where they lived. She and Claude were instrumental in starting a Southern Baptist Church during their time in Moab. She made sure her children were all raised in the church and were instilled with those values.
Sarah was raised during the depression and endured many difficult and lean years being one of thirteen people in her family. She was raised to be strong willed, independent, and hard working. She did not believe in wasting anything. She was never afraid of hard work and always had some kind of job when money was tight.
Above all her children always knew that she would do anything for her grandchildren. She never said no when help was needed. She often kept her grandchildren all week while their parents worked. So many of them moved back in with her while going to college, starting new jobs, or in between moves. Each were welcomed with open arms.
Mom/ Grandma was one of a kind. There will never be another like her. Oh, the stories we could tell. She will be so sadly missed by all that knew her, but what memories she leaves behind.
Sarah was preceded in death by her husband, Claude Tidwell, sons; Joe and Randle, and her Granddaughter, Timi Mauck.
She is survived by one brother, Garth Griggs, 84, of Ft. Worth, TX, her children Claudia (Dale) Mauck, Duane (MaryAnn) Tidwell, Emmett Tidwell, Dale (Rita) Tidwell, daughter in law, Linda Scott, and stepson Claude Tidwell Jr., 10 beloved grandchildren, 19 great grandchildren, and 4 great-great grandchildren.
