Sara Lorraine Stone (nee Kroehl) died unexpectedly at home from natural causes on 08/23/2022. She was born in Boulder, Colorado and grew up in Berthoud, Colorado. Her parents are Herbert and Lorraine Kroehl of Boulder, Colorado.
Sara was a fun-loving, outgoing and sweet child who always had a smile on her face, and her childhood centered on her brothers, her friends, and her horse, Bunny Bliss, who she groomed and rode every day for many years. She was an excellent student and enjoyed school, piano and dance lessons, creating ceramics in 4-H Club, performing in high school theatre productions, and numerous sleepovers with girlfriends. Her friends meant so much to her, and she maintained several of those early friendships until her death. She graduated from Berthoud High School in 1990, and from the Kansas City Art Institute in 1994 with a BFA in Illustration. She was a free spirit—smart, witty, fun loving, talented, beautiful, and well-loved by her family and friends.
Sara showed a strong interest and talent in art of all kinds from a young age and developed it further at the Kansas City Art Institute. She was a talented graphic designer and worked in that field in Kansas City and in Colorado. She continued to draw and paint in various mediums and to experiment with new techniques until her death. She sold some of her paintings through the years and left many beautiful works behind. She was active as a fighter in the Society for Creative Anachronisms while in college and for several years in Colorado.
Sara married Tobe Tennyson in Kansas City in 1995; they divorced in 1999 and she moved back to Colorado. She married Steve Stone in Boulder, Colorado in 2004, and they have two daughters, Hazel, born in 2005, and Katherine, born in 2007. Her daughters have been the light in her life since their births, and she has left them with wonderful memories of her wit, playfulness, creativity, and love. Sara and Steve divorced in 2020 and until her death the couple shared time with their daughters amicably and equally.
Sara is survived by her two daughters, Hazel and Katherine; parents, Herbert and Hazel Lorraine Kroehl; brother, Nicholas Kroehl (Elizabeth) and their children, Harlow and Dexter; brother, Peter Kroehl (Miranda) and their sons, Auggie and Hendrick; as well as numerous cousins, aunts, uncles, and friends. We all miss her and will carry her in our hearts forever.
A celebration of Sara’s life will be held on October 22, 2022. Please contact Sara’s family at [email protected] for more information.
