Joan Elizabeth (Hay) Winter died peacefully on 19th June at the age of 92. Sister of Doug and Frances, beloved wife of Fred for 60 years, dear mother of Elizabeth (Ron), Penelope (Jon), Mary (James) and Michael (Irene), devoted grandmother of Jennifer, Leslie, Ian, Eleanor, Colin, Suzanne, Neil, Rachel, Peter, Paul, Hannah, Troy and Matthew, and great-grandmother of Mimi, Kai, Kimi, Benjamin, Ashton and Jessie.
Born in Lethbridge, Alberta, in 1925, Joan grew up on a government Experimental Farm, where she worked in the summer during the war years. She took her BA at the University of Alberta, then went to work at the Royal Ontario Museum in Toronto, where she studied to become an archaeologist.
Joan was utterly devoted to raising her family, and later was equally devoted to working and travelling with her archaeologist husband. A variety of groups benefited over the years from her considerable organisational talents. Her quiet kindness and thoughtfulness were widely respected, and her example has touched the lives of many.
