Jim passed away peacefully at 84, with his niece by his side at the Houses of Providence LTC in Toronto. Only child of the late Sarah Stevenson Burnett and Thomas Burnett. Predeceased by his wife Mary Patricia (Lobraico) Burnett (2021). Fondly remembered by many nieces and nephews in Ontario and the US. Born in Toronto, Jim was proud of his family roots in Scotland. He attended St. Michael’s Choir School which nurtured in him a lifelong love of music – liturgical, classical, Broadway musicals and Big Band. Jim sang in church choirs and musical groups throughout his life. Even as his dementia was progressing, Jim was able to attend mass regularly and sing the lyrics of most hymns from memory. He attended De La Salle College for his high school education.
Jim lived a faith-filled life, devoted to the Lord, through kindness to friends, charitable donations, participation in the parish Out of The Cold program and the Knights of Columbus as well as the music ministry at Our Lady of Fatima Church. A soft-spoken gentleman, with an understated manner and a dry sense of humour, most people who knew Jim were struck by his compassion, generosity and his trademark baseball cap. Go Jays Go!
Jim was employed by the Sisters of St. Joseph in the Purchasing Department at Providence Villa (now Providence Healthcare). There he met Villa volunteer, Pat Lobraico who would become his wife. The family is grateful to both the personal care & spiritual care staff at the Houses of Providence. Cremation has taken place.
Funeral mass at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, January 9, 2024 at Our Lady of Fatima Shrine Church in Scarborough. Burial immediately afterward at Mount Hope Cemetery.
