HCol Doris Elsie Guyatt, Queen's Diamond Jubilee, C.D., Commissionaires, PhD. - Peacefully, with her family by her side, on Wednesday, March 14, 2012 at Sunnybrook Hospital, Toronto, Ontario. Beloved wife of 61 years of Glenn Guyatt. Loving mother of Richard (Evelyn), Leslie (Stephen Woodland), Neil (Marlene Petrie), Alan (Ruth Demeter). Grandma will be sadly missed by April, Christine, Jack and Derek. Dear sister of Ruth Woolcott.
Doris was born in New Glasgow, Nova Scotia. She attended the University of Western Ontario and the University of Toronto where she obtained her B.A. in General Science and a B.S.W., M.S.W., and PhD in Social Work. After completing her doctorate, she was employed by the Government of Ontario in a number of research, policy and planning positions for the Ministry of Community and Social Services and the Ministry of Health. At her retirement, she was Acting Manager of the Advocacy and Guardianship Unit of the Ministry of Health.
Mrs. Guyatt was a Woman of Distinction (Y.W.C.A.), a champion for the advancement of women and motherhood. She served in voluntary positions on the Boards of many community, provincial and national organizations including President of the Canadian Federation of Business and Professional Women's Clubs, President of the Canadian Intelligence and Security Association and President of the Toronto Branch of the Ontario Association of Social Workers. She was a director of the Atlantic Council of Canada, of the Alumni Association of the Faculty of Social Work, of the Canadian Legion Branch #165 and a member of the Board of Sunnybrook Health Sciences Center.
Prior to her appointment an Honorary Colonel of the 25 (Toronto) Field Ambulance, Colonel Guyatt served in the Canadian Forces Reserve for seventeen years and for 27 years as a Military Aide de Camp to five Lieutenant Governors of Ontario. She was the recipient of the Queen's Diamond Jubilee, C.D., the Canada 125 Commemorative Medal, and the Canadian Corps of Commissionaires Long Service Medal. She was awarded the Arbor Award by the University of Toronto. She received a Vice-Regal Commendation, the Lieutenant Governor's Volunteer Medal, the Queen's Silver Jubilee Medal, and the Queen's Golden Jubilee Medal.
Friends may visit at the Jerrett Funeral Home-Vaughan Chapel, 8088 Yonge Street (south of Hwy. 7), Thornhill, Ontario on Sunday, March 18, 2012 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. A funeral service will be held in the chapel of the funeral home on Monday, March 19, 2012 at 1 p.m. Canon Rev. Hobbs officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Sunnybrook Foundation unrestricted would be appreciated by the family as your expression of sympathy.
