Larry proudly served in the United States Air Force from 1960 to 1966. He continued his public service by dedicating nearly 43 years of his life to his second family, the Houston Fire Department. Larry was known for his unwavering commitment to service until his retirement as a Senior Captain in 2005.
When not serving the citizens of Houston, Larry could be found on a boat fishing the East Matagorda Bay. Sargent was his second home where his heart and passions lived and thrived. His retirement was spent happily on the waters of Caney Creek where he created treasured memories with his wife, children, and grandchildren.
Larry was preceded in death by his parents, Cecil Lawrence Benson and Edith Storres Benson, his brother, Carl Wayne Benson, and nephew, Michael Alan Benson.
Larry is survived by his beloved wife of 56 years, Vera Christine Benson. He leaves behind two sons, David Edward Benson and Stephen Matthew Benson, daughter-in-law, Terri Benson, and niece, Cynthia McMordie and her husband Doug McMordie. He cherished his role as a grandfather to four grandchildren: Ethan Edward Benson (22), Sage Alexandra Benson (22), Marissa Grace Benson (19), and John Matthew Benson (19).
Larry will be remembered for his professionalism, dedication, contagious joviality, and the love he shared with his family, HFD, and his treasured Sargent and East Matagorda Bay. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
A memorial service for Larry will be held Friday, October 11, 2024 from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM at Forest Park The Woodlands Funeral Home & Cemetery, 18000 Interstate 45 S, The Woodlands, TX 77384, followed by a reception from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM.
