Kenneth John Sheldon, 83, died peacefully with the comfort of his family on Thursday, July 20, 2023, after a brief hospitalization. Ken Sheldon was born May 23, 1940, in Waterbury, Connecticut, the middle son of Robert and Marguerite (Mclean) Sheldon.
His early life had its share of challenges including the death of his father when he was 13, being raised by a single mother in the 1950s, and a house fire that destroyed the family home. He graduated from Wilby High School in Waterbury in 1957 and entered the Army. Following his military service, Ken married his wife Arlene, had two children, and worked various jobs while attending college, eventually earning his Chemistry degree from Southern Connecticut State College in 1969. He went to work for Uniroyal Chemical in a position that took him and his family to Chicago.
After a few years in Chicago, he was transferred to Houston in 1972. Despite his yankee roots, he loved Houston and chose to make it his permanent home. Throughout his life he developed numerous pursuits outside of work including golf, cycling, cards, ice cream aficionado and horseman. He was generous toward and supportive of those he loved. He was a proud grandfather who could always be spotted at his grandchildren’s games, events and performances. Ken “Road the Rockies” for many years with his bike buddies and had logged numerous impressive bike crashes from Houston to Hawaii. He enjoyed a successful career that began with Uniroyal Chemical and continued with Westvaco Corporation until his retirement in 2003. He was a long time member of April Sound Country Club.
Ken was preceded in death by his father Robert Sheldon Sr., his brother Robert Sheldon, his mother Marguerite McLean Sheldon and his niece Lori Sheldon.
He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Arlene Kechkes Sheldon, their two children Kenneth Mark (Lynne) Sheldon and Deborah Sheldon, his two Grandchildren Erin (Anthony) Jonguitud and Kenneth Blane Sheldon, his many nieces and nephews, his dog LuLu, his horse Jasper, his many friends as well as cyclists, card sharks and golfers everywhere.
A memorial service will be held on August 1st at 2pm, at Forest Park Funeral Home - The Woodlands, 18000 I-45, The Woodlands, Texas. 77384.
