Don DePugh was born in Atlanta, Georgia on November 29, 1934. Don was the youngest son of Earl and Rose DePugh. Don, the youngest of four, was born during the great depression and grew up during pretty hard times. Don’s two older sisters, Mary and Pat, were 15 years older than he and his brother Dick, and started families when Don was very young. Despite the large age gap, both Mary and Pat’s families lived together with Don and Dick, growing up in the same house. Don’s father, Earl, was a meat packer and traversed most of the Midwest following the meatpacking business. Don’s fondest memories of his childhood are with his brother Dick. Most of those memories took place in Utica, New York or Pewaukee, Wisconsin.
At 10 years old, Don was employed as a pinsetter at a bowling alley. That was the beginning of his work career that continued for another 73 years. Don finished high school in Houston Texas, and he went on to college at the University of St. Thomas where he met his wife, Mary Belle Koenig. They married on August 17, 1957, and had four boys Paul, Steve, Mark, and Pat. Don was a baseball coach and scout leader for all his kids. Don worked for an oil and gas publisher, Gulf Publishing Company, for 59 years and made many lifelong friends in that industry.
Don was married to his wife Mary for 53 years and was a devoted caretaker for her in her final years. Don loved to golf and watch his beloved Astros play. He was an avid history buff, especially World War II history—a love he shared with his brother Dick. Don has the best book collection any one has ever seen. After retirement, Don took to reading as much as he could while keeping logs of his review of every book. He was an exceptional grandfather, never ceasing to remember birthdays, events, and random phone calls to check-in and say, “I love you kid!” Don’s legacy of hard work and love in all that one does will continue to inspire his family for generations to come.
In addition to his parents, Don DePugh was preceded in death by his spouse Mary Belle DePugh and his two sisters Mary Morse and Pat Ellis.
He is survived by his brother Dick DePugh, his children Paul DePugh and his spouse Leica, Steve DePugh and his spouse Suzanne, Mark DePugh, and Pat DePugh. Don is also survived by his ten grandchildren Cassie Gatlin, Matthew DePugh, Laura Fleck, Meagan DePugh, Lauren Dickerson, Jacob Leroux, Georgiana DePugh, Michael DePugh, Emma DePugh, and Madison DePugh, and two surviving great-grandchildren, Miles Dickerson, and Wyatt Fleck.
