David Clayton Wells

David Clayton Wells, 43, beloved husband, father, son, brother, uncle, nephew and friend, was suddenly called home by his Heavenly Father, on March 2, 2023, in The Woodlands, Texas, with April, his wife, by his side.

David was a loving and devoted husband to his wife, and an amazing role model for his son.

David was born on February 18, 1980 in Stillwater, Oklahoma. David was 5 months old when his family moved to Columbia, Missouri where he grew up and called Columbia home. David accepted Jesus as his personal Lord and Savior at a young age, and was baptized as a profession of his faith at Parkade Baptist Church in Columbia, MO. He is a 1998 graduate of Rock Bridge High School in Columbia, MO, where he was very active in the Rock Bridge Show Choir and Men’s Quartet, music department and student government (student council officer) as well as participating in football, golf, track and basketball.

David attended Baylor University, were he was in the Pi Kappa Alpha Fraternity. Following 9-11, he joined the Marine Reserves at the age of 22. He was deployed in 2005-2006, as a Nuclear Biological Chemical Warfare specialist, which lead him to be a Combat Mortuary Affairs Specialist with the Marines to Al Fallujah, Iraq, in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. In 2011, David completed Officer Candidate School after transferring to the California National Guard, ultimately achieving the rank of Captain. He was deployed for a year with the California National Guard to Qatar beginning in September 2017.

David was proud of his military service. He had a passion for the military and was a strong advocate for both military personnel and veterans. David used the GI Bill to complete degrees in Psychology (BA), Mortuary Science and Embalming (AS), and Business Administration and Management (MS).

In 2021, after being promoted to his current corporate position as Corporate Manager of Funeral Pricing and Merchandising at Service Corporation International (SCI), he moved his family to Spring, TX. SCI is North America’s leading provider of funeral, cremation and cemetery services. David was just recently honored to receive the Saint Barbara Award which recognizes those individuals who have demonstrated the highest standards of integrity and moral character; displayed an outstanding degree of professional competence; and served the United States Army or Marine Corps Field Artillery. For almost 2 years David continued leading his command in the California National Guard and had just relinquished his command on February 26, 2023.

David was known for his quick wit and humor (sometimes inappropriate) but, nevertheless, hysterical most of the time. David was focused on Physical fitness and maintaining his outward appearance and health.

One of David’s many ways he gave of himself was coaching. David was an assistant football coach of San Clemente High School in San Clemente, CA, where he also led the High School Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA). David coached his son’s little league baseball teams, and coached his son’s Trinity Klein 5th grade basketball team. He also enjoyed playing drums in the praise band at Trinity Klein Lutheran Church.

David is survived by his wife, April (Riebau) Wells and son, Clayton John Allen (10) of Spring, TX; Parents, Michael and Fran Wells of Spring, Texas (formerly of Columbia, MO); sister, Courtney (Wells) Hammermeister and husband, Gregory and their sons, Weston Michael Hammermeister and Wells Lane Hammermeister of Hewitt, TX, Tylor Wayne Hammermeister of Chalk Bluff, TX, and daughter, Taryn Nacol Hammermeister of Grapevine, TX. He is also survived by his sister-in-law, Meredith Dufield of Anaheim, CA; niece, Autumn Dufield of Phoenix, Arizona; and nephew, Aaron Dufield of Anaheim, CA., as well as loving aunts, uncles, cousins, family members and friends.

Services will be on Saturday, March 11, 2023, at Trinity Klein Lutheran Church, in Spring, Texas. Visitation will be 9am-11am, with his funeral service to follow at 11am, where full military honors will be rendered. Interment will be in the Houston National Cemetery on Monday, March 13, 2023 at 12:45pm. Arrangements are being handled by Forest Park Funeral Home, The Woodlands, Texas.

In honor of David C. Wells, memorials can be made to the Wounded Warriors Organization, and the Trinity Klein Lutheran School Athletic Department.
