Richard “Dick” Wayne Nicholson, 68, of Terre Haute, went to the arms of Jesus on Tuesday, March 5, 2013. He was born on January 7, 1945, in Terre Haute to Donald Guy and Winnie Elizabeth (Houston) Nicholson. Dick was a 1963 graduate of West Vigo High School. He proudly served in the United States Army in the Vietnam War. He retired from GTE after 30 years of service. He also retired after 16 years as a bus driver for Vigo County Schools. Dick attended New Life Community Church.
Dick is survived by his wife, Dixie (Hoffman) Nicholson of Terre Haute; children, Tami Nicholson of Terre Haute, and Michelle Nicholson of Irmo, SC; grandchildren, Isaiah Dooley, Kaleigh All, and Sadie All; great-grandchildren, Peyton, Annalyse, and Madison Dooley; a brother Bill Nicholson; brother-in-laws, Joe Hoffman (Debbie) and Bob Terrell; sister-in-law, Kathy Flinn; close friend and honorary son, Troy Bensinger; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, and sisters Barbara Terrell and Maribeth Barton.
Dick will be most remembered for his outspoken love of God, and his devotion to Family and Country. No words can describe this big teddy bear of a man, affectionately called husband, dad, brother, grandpa, and uncle, a true hero to all who knew him.
Visitation will be from 4 until 8 p.m. on Thursday, March 7 at Mattox-Wood Funeral Home. A funeral service will take place at 2 p.m. on Friday, March 8 with visitation an hour prior to services at the funeral home with Pastor Paul Carey officiating.
