James Allen Shafer

James was preceded in death by his parents Carl and Edna Shafer, a brother Charles Shafer, three sisters, Mary Lou Shafer, Betty Firmani and Marie Favre. He was also preceded by the mother of his children, Marlene Shafer and infant great grand-daughter Keiara E. Sears.

He is survived by two sisters, Geneva Miller (Jim) of Terre Haute, Loretta Krause of Pennsylvania and brother Carl Shafer (Betty) of Texas. Also, five children, Donald (Butch) Shafer, Sarah E. Higgins, Theresa D. Booker, Lisa M. Lugabihl and husband Warren and Rhonda L. Knight. He is also survived by nine grandchildren; Myranda (Adam) Hartman, Tiffany Sears, USAF SSgt. Robert Shafer, Jamie Fagg, Ashley (Chris) Judson, Anthony Cooper, Heather (Charles) Judson, Caleb Shafer and Alaina Valadez (Catlin). James had seven great grandchildren; William, Natasha, Benjamin, Nathaniel, Caden, Jayde, and Liam, also, step-daughter Leann Akers and her children Trent Jr. and Amber Fortner. He was loved and will also be missed by his many nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.

James was born at home in Terre Haute, In. on Dec. 29, 1931. He attended school in Farmersburg until graduation in 1950. He was known as "Shotgun Shafer" by his basketball teammates. He entered the United States Navy in 1951 serving 4 years, which included time during the Korean War.

He retired after many years from Anaconda/Alcan Aluminum. After retirement he worked various jobs to stay busy until unable to work due to his illness. Through his hobbies he made many lifelong friends. His hobbies included hunting, fishing, golf and bowling, winning many trophies over the years, which he later donated to the Terre Haute Boys and Girls Club. James was also an avid IU fan seldom missing a game.

James (Dad) was greatly loved and will be missed more than words could ever express.

The family would like to express their sincere gratitude to Southern Care Hospice Staff, Dr. Andreason, Dr. Maynard, and Dr. S. Patel, also other staff at Union Hospital who assisted in our dad's care.

A special thank you to Dixie Haag from Intrepid Healthcare, who was not only dad's first home health nurse, but also became his dear friend.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 on Tuesday, May 28 at Roselawn Funeral Home and again from 11 until time of services on Wednesday, May 29. Services will be held at 1 p.m. on Wednesday at the funeral home with Pastor Larry Richmond officiating. Burial with military honors performed by VFW Post 972 will follow in Roselawn Memorial Park.
