Carl W. Richey Sr.

Carl W. Richey, Sr. age 90, of Terre Haute, Indiana, passed away on April 19, 2023. He was born on October 3, 1932, in Rosedale, Indiana, to Arthur Richey and Florence (Fields) Richey. Carl is survived by his five children: Jody Winko (Gary), Rosalie Dabelow (Marvin), Arlene Gavin, Carl W. Richey Jr. (Anna), and Louella Richey Brown (Marc); his 11 grandchildren: Christopher, Barry, and Nicholas Winko, Holly and Daniel Jaeger, Emily and Michael Gavin, Justin, Matthew, and Andrew Cobb, and Joey Brown; along with his 11 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his brother, Paul Richey, and nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 68 years, Josephine Marion (Eisman) Richey, and his parents and siblings: Rosemary Dickerson, Virginia Barnett, Norman Richey, and Carol Sue Elkins. Carl is a veteran of the Korean War. He served as a Corporal in the 44th Military Police Detachment at Fort Lewis, Washington, from 1953 to 1955. He graduated from the Army Field Forces Advanced Leadership Course at Fort Ord, California. During his time in the Army, he served on President Dwight Eisenhower’s security detail during the dedication of the McNary Dam. While on guard duty, he was approached by the President (who had a well-known reputation for engaging with soldiers), and Eisenhower spoke to Carl and shook his hand. Carl also served on Audie Murphy’s security detail and was a movie extra in “To Hell and Back” during filming at Fort Lewis, Washington. Carl was devoted to his family and always willing to lend a helping hand to his family and neighbors. He was gifted with a photographic memory and loved to sing songs and tell stories and accounts of his childhood during the great depression and his life adventures. He played the harmonica and enjoyed entertaining family and friends. He loved his grandchildren and was playful and full of wit, believing life should never be taken too seriously. Carl climbed the Rocky Mountains at the age of 74, acquiring the trail name “Super-Fast Grandpa,” and loved to walk daily with his dog Prince and ride his bike in later years. He was also a self-taught auto mechanic and jack of all trades. He was a contractor and employer, owned Carl Richey, Sr. Painting and Decorating with his wife and life partner running the financial and marketing aspects of the business. Carl worked in Indiana and Illinois's institutional, commercial, and residential markets. He was known for his excellent work ethic and customer care, and he made a living from customer referrals, retiring at the age of 70. He was a member of the American Legion Krietenstein Post 104, Terre Haute, Indiana. Visitation will be held on Saturday, May 6, 2023 from 10 am-12 pm at Roselawn Funeral Home in Terre Haute. A Memorial service with military funeral honors will begin at 12 pm with Pastor Ric May officiating and a Chapel Committal service to follow. Carl will be laid to rest with his wife, Josephine, in the Chapel of Memories at Roselawn Memorial Park.
