Reynath " Rey " Whitener, age 85, of Temple, Texas, passed away peacefully on December 4, 2023. He was born on September 27, 1938, on a farm in Paducah, Texas, to John Cole and Lela Whitener. Rey lived a full and meaningful life, leaving behind a legacy of dedication, service, and love.
Rey's life began on the family farm where he worked in his youth growing crops with his father. His family later moved to Amarillo, and he graduated from Amarillo High School in 1957. Eager to serve his country, Rey joined the Army Reserve in 1958 where he served in the 49th Armored Division. In 1962, during his time at Ft. Polk, he was awarded the Army Commendation Medal for his service in the famous armor exercise “Iron Dragoon.” His military career continued with a posting in Germany, where he served as a guard on the East German border.
In 1961, Rey married the love of his life, Peggy Ann Schiller, and upon his discharge from the Army in 1964, they both moved to Temple. Rey and Peggy shared many years together until her passing in 2008. Rey was also preceded in death by his brother, Dennis Whitener, of Destrehan, LA, in 2001. He is survived by his son, Michael Whitener, of Temple; sister Carolyn Peek of Amarillo; two grandsons, Wilson and Corrin Whitener, both of Temple; and great-granddaughter Magdalene Whitener.
Rey's professional life was marked by hard work, dedication, and respect among his peers. He spent the majority of his career in the asphalt and paving business. Rey's commitment to his craft was evident as he only chose to retire at the age of 82, having spent over 50 years contributing to the industry he loved.
