Jay was predeceased by his parents and brother Al of Nashville, TN. Jay is survived by his wife of 70 years, Ann McKeel Ross and his three sons Cary (Sandy), Brian and David, his five granddaughters Kelly, Katherine, Ann, Meredith and Caroline, his great-grandson Cooper, and his faithful dog Happy.
Jay was an accomplished piano player, having played for weddings and gatherings until choosing to pursue a career in dentistry. He was known for his singing and creative writing of short and long programs and being an all-around performer.
Jay graduated from the University of Louisville School of Dentistry, and attended Lipscomb University, Vanderbilt University, and Western Kentucky University. After graduation from dental school, Jay was stationed in Tampa at MacDill Air Force Base from 1957-1960, serving as an Air Force Captain. Upon completion of his military service, Jay established his private dental practice in Tampa. He greatly enjoyed dentistry and providing care to many people throughout his years of practice, including volunteering at the Judeo Christian Health Clinic. Jay was always appreciative and grateful for his outstanding support team and the consulting professionals who joined with him in serving his dental patients with excellence.
Over the course of his career, Jay gained numerous achievements and recognitions: President of the Hillsborough County Dental Society, Trustee of the Florida Dental Association, Fellow of the Academy of General Dentistry, Fellow of the American College of Dentistry, Delegate to the American Dental Association, Member of the Academy of One Hundred, Member of the Board of Directors Florida Dental Political Action Committee, Member of the West Coast Dental Association. In 1985 Jay was appointed by the Governor of Kentucky to be a Kentucky Colonel.
Jay was a long-time member of the Temple Terrace Presbyterian Church. Jay also served as a member of the Berkeley Preparatory School Board of Trustees and President of the Dad’s Club, the Jesuit High School Dad’s Club, and the University of South Florida Green Jacket Board of Directors. He was the USF Basketball team dentist for 25 years. Jay and Ann were founding members of the USF Graphicstudio; two of the original visionaries of the Gasparilla Sidewalk Arts Festival; and active supporters of numerous artists, art galleries, museums, theater groups and musical performers.
Jay retired from dentistry in 1996 after 36 years of practice. He and Ann spent retirement loving and laughing with family and friends; enjoying their beloved community’s many resources; and continuing a wonderful and happy life. Jay is immensely missed by his loved ones.
At Jay’s request, there will be no formal service.
