God gathered his angels and told them to search the world over for a specific angel he needed. Someone to fix everything broken and to teach others how it's done. Someone who was courageous, loyal and family oriented. They found our Don who wasn't selfish and agreed to go.
He was Methodist by faith and was active in his church (Thonotosassa United Methodist) helping with maintenance and any other issues that may arise.
Donald was a retired Master Sergeant in ground Radio Communications Superintendent of 23 1/2 years. He received 16 different medals during the course of his service, and of course he continued with the Boy Scouts for grandson.
Donald enjoyed camping in his RV and spending time with his family. He was our hero.
He spent the last days at James A. Haley VA Hospital with a group of wonderful people. All their staff treated Donald and his wife with the greatest respect and dignity. We would like to thank each and every one of them.
Reverend Thomas Hemby will be delivering the service.
He was preceded in death by his parents; Elizabeth and Arthur; sisters, Carolyn and Betsy; brother, Paul; son, Brian and daughter, Dawn.
Survivors include his loving wife of 25 years, Mary Ann Smith; children, Donnie Smith, Virginia Robbins (Rusty), Cassandra Elliott (Ted), Melanie DeGarmo, James Hoffman Jr. (Brenda), Josie Flanigan (Brian) and Joe Hoffman; brothers, David and Roger; sister, Winifred; 14 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
A visitation will be held Sunday, August 14, 2022 from 1- 3 pm at Blount & Curry, Terrace Oaks Chapel, 12690 N 56th Street, Temple Terrace, FL 33617, followed by a funeral service beginning at 3 pm.
