Returning to Taylor after his service in WWII, he worked at the City National Bank as a teller before moving his family to Austin in 1949. Roland and his brother loved fast-pitch softball, both becoming pitchers for the Taylor All Stars. His love of sports, especially baseball, and of family resulted in his wife and children attending most of the games he umpired for the Austin Recreation Department and as a basketball referee on the University of Texas Main Campus. He was also active with both children in baseball leagues and other sports. Roland umpired and refereed while working at the Austin National Bank. His career at the Austin National Bank on Congress and 5th Street in Austin, Texas, began as a teller and continued as an auditor for the then largest bank in Austin. Roland continued his banking career with Bank of the Hills in Austin, Texas. His wife Evelyn completed 27 years as a Registered Nurse to join him when he travelled all of the 48 states in the continental United States for the La Quinta/Roadway Motel chain as an auditor. Roland then accepted a position as Operations Officer of Lexington Motor Inns, moving to the Dallas area, before he retired to settle in Round Rock to enjoy his grandchildren and travel overseas. His grandchildren convinced him to be a crossing guard at their elementary school where he became known as “Mr. T”. He became the adopted grandfather by dozens of children who loved him.
