Samuel Douglas Carlson passed away in Tampa, FL on November 2, 2023 after a prolonged illness. Sam was born in Ft. Lewis, Washington to Rhoda (Nystrom) and Carsten Carlson. He proudly served his country with the U.S. Army for over 20 years, retiring in 1988, before he was recalled for active duty 2005-2010 and gladly claimed the title of “Oldest Captain in the Army.” In his private life, Sam was an avid genealogist, historian and bass player, and he combined these loves to create a digital archive for Pacific Northwest Music scene of the 50s, 60s, and 70s, which he worked on for over 20 years. Sam was kind, generous, hilarious and much loved by his family and wide network of friends.
Sam joins his parents Rhoda (Nystrom) and Carsten Douglas Carlson and brother Carsten Dean Carlson, and he is survived by wife Elizabeth, children Samuel Dean Carlson and wife Yuni, Jeanette Carlson, and Jackie Carlson and partner Garry Gillooly, six grandchildren, and one great-grandchild.
