Rosendo M. Leon “Tabaco”, 87, went home to be with the Lord February 7, 2017. He was a native of San Antonio de los Baños, Cuba and resident of Tampa FL for 55 years. He was preceded in death by his parents Ricardo and Orosia Leon; brothers Roberto and Sergio Leon; sister Marta Azoy; daughter in law Kim Leon.
Rosendo was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather. He is survived by his wife of 62 yrs Gladis; sons, Rosendo (Dolly) Leon, Ricardo Leon; grandchildren Angela (Anthony) Vetrano, Cortney (John) Bowenkamp, Richard Leon, Nicole Leon, David Leon; great grandchildren Dean, Nicholas, Stella, Baya, Nathaniel, Gabriel, Kaylani and Cyrus; brother Ricardo Leon Jr; sisters Romelia Godinez, Angela “Elba” Gonzalez, and Gilda Garcia; and many nieces and nephews.
Rosendo graduated from Academia Baldor in Havana, was married to Gladis on June 6th 1954, he worked for The Trust Company Bank in Havana. In 1962 he chose freedom for his family and made the 90-mile flight to start a new life in Tampa, Florida. Once in Tampa Rosendo worked as a supervisor for Leon and Son’s Sod Company, a family business. Rosendo loved baseball and softball which he played into his 60’s, he enjoyed his heritage of smoking cigars, had a love for the ocean, fishing, drawing, painting and was an original member of the Cuban Civic Club and held many positions. Rosendo and Gladis were members of St Joseph’s Catholic church. He will be greatly missed by all who loved him.
Visitation will be held at 10 am, until the time of service at 11 am, at Gonzalez Funeral Home 7209 North Dale Mabry Highway. Graveside blessing to follow at Garden of Memories, 4207 E. Lake Ave.
