There are so many stories that can be said. He was known as a man that always had a smile on his face and an easy going disposition. He was very protective of his family, and was always there to lend a helping hand when asked.
Miguel was born December 31, 1934 in Utuado, Puerto Rico. His parents, Ignacio and Julia Cortés, lived on a farm of which his father was a foreman. In those days it was customary that the boys in the house did farm labor. Being the first born there was much expected of him including protecting his younger sisters.
Growing up, on weekends, Miguel and his siblings would go to a nearby river where they would spend many hours swimming and fishing. He also enjoyed playing card games. His passion was playing the guitar and singing. His father played the 10 string guitar known as “el cuatro”, and all of his uncles also played the guitar so at an early age he learned to play. And that became his passion in life – playing the guitar and singing songs.
As a young man he lived in Florida, and later on he moved to Cleveland, Ohio where he married, and began raising a family. Among many things, he did warehousing work to provide for his family.
His faith was very important to him. He was an active member in the church he attended. He played many roles in the church, from teaching the Bible, preaching the Word of God, to playing instruments in church services.
Miguel, throughout the years, acquired many friends who he was supportive of in one way or another. He cared for people, and he did it with a genuine heart. Miguel was a man who took pride in keeping his word. Sometimes even in times when he physically was not able to do things, he did it anyway because he liked keeping his promises.
The children are witnesses of his teachings and guidance. He taught them to follow good principles, to be truthful, and to care and love one another. From childhood his children were disciplined, and were encouraged to attend church and seek God. He was a good listener, but offered counseling only when he was asked.
Traveling was his thing! He enjoyed visiting the family and all of his friends. So when planning a trip Miguel was one who wanted to be counted in. His visits were sudden and unexpected at times, leaving our hearts with mixed emotions. Only Miguel could make people laugh, for he had the joy in his heart which he expressed and shared with so many people.
essed and shared with so many people.
