Joseph Steely White, loved by so many, and most of all by his family, passed away at 81 on Tuesday, February 1, in Tampa, the same city in which he was born. Strong and kind, loyal and generous, Joe was described as someone who would give you the shirt off his back, and his pants and his shoes too.
A natural athlete, Joe graduated in 1958 from Hillsborough High School and played football at the University of Tampa. He had a decorated career as a City of Tampa firefighter and retired with the rank of Captain. He had an exceptional eye for detail and exhibited high standards of workmanship in every project he undertook. You could spot a “Joe White” job by its exquisite craftsmanship and ingenuity, and his artistic ability in drawing, writing and carpentry was evident from a young age.
Joe will be remembered most of all for his steady devotion to those he loved. He was married to Marie Capitano in 1959 until her death in 2009. Together, they created a home where all were welcome and family members and friends were treated to a warm hello, a cup of coffee, and something good to eat. They raised four children who went through life with the benefit of knowing that their parents had made them the center of their world. Joe shared his last ten years with Patti Arrington, a loving companion who, along with her extended family, brought him great joy.
He is survived by his children: Joseph, Jr. (Jean), Nancy Jergins (Brad), Patti Farmer (Matt), and Steven (Danette) as well as his six cherished and adored grandchildren who loved him as Papa: Declan, Siena, Ronan, Clara, Andrew and Luca. He is also survived by his loving and devoted siblings: Pete, Paul, Leta, Sue, and Tommy; plus many beloved nieces and nephews. Joe was predeceased by his parents, Steely and Marian.
As a father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend, he will be deeply missed, and his kindness, hard work, and sacrifice will be remembered always. Joe was a quiet man, but he loved the energy of his family and friends talking to each other around him as he sat back and listened. That is when he was happiest. We will miss having you among us, Dad.
Visitation will be held Wed., Feb, 9 at 10:00 a.m. at Blount & Curry Funeral Home at Garden of Memories, 4207 E. Lake Ave., Tampa, 33610. A Funeral Service will immediately follow at 10:30 a.m.
