MILLER, HELEN JANE (TOMLINSON) age 89, went to be with the Lord April 12, 2021. A native of Ft. Wayne, Indiana she spent most of her life in Tampa, Florida. She graduated from Hillsborough High School and the University of Tampa with a BS degree in Education. She was a member of Alpha Chi Omega sorority.
Helen taught 16 years in the Hillsborough County School System. Helen moved with her husband to Atlanta, Georgia where she received a MLS degree from Emory University. She was head Media Specialist at Henry County High School for 20 years. While in Georgia she belonged to many professional organizations, holding numerous offices including State advisor for the Georgia Association of Media Assistants a student organization. In 1987, she was named Georgia High School Library-Media Specialist of the year. She helped organize and served as Treasure-Manager of Henry County Federal Credit for seven years. She was a member of the Tri-City’s BFW Club, serving several times as president, North Central District Director and Tri-City’s Woman of the Year.
When they retired she and her husband returned to their beloved Tampa, Florida. Helen was a past Worthy Matron of Harmony Chapter No. 148, OES and a present member of Trinity Chapter, 240. She has been a member for 51 years of Elim Temple No. 76, Daughters of the Nile and served as Queen in 1997. Since retirement she has worked with the Daughters of the Nile in raising fund and sewing for the children of the Shriners Hospital.
Helen is survived by her loving husband of 66 years, Charles, sister Mary Ann, sister in law Mary and many nieces, nephews and numerous friends. Preceded in death by Dick Tomlinson, brother and Gene Colter, brother in law. Visitations will be on Friday, April 16th from 5-7 p.m. with the Daughter of Nile service on Saturday, April 17th at 12:00 p.m. at the Tampa Garden of Memories. In place of flowers, donations can be made to Elim Temple No. 76 Convalescent Endowment Fund or Egypt Shrine Hospital Transportation Fund.
