Gertrudis was the oldest of three children born to Laura Estevez and Jose M. Hernandez. As a young lady, Gertrudis, a devoted Catholic, used to teach catechism to the local children in the family back yard. Once the family moved from the Dominican Republic to New York, Gertrudis took on the responsibility of caring for her younger sisters while their mother worked. As an adult, Gertrudis spent most of her life living in the Bronx, in New York and was a lover of music, ballet and dancing. But her love for helping others was what got her into the field of nursing, and she earned her bachelor’s degree in nursing at Lehman College City University of New York in 1993. Gertrudis was a unique, unselfish individual who was always giving to her family, friends, and others.
While in New York, she met her husband John Paul Casaubon and had two wonderful children Collette Casaubon and John Casaubon. She loved spending time with her family and was a devoted, mother, grandmother, and friend. She used to volunteer in different churches to help feed the poor. In her free time, she enjoyed playing cards with her aunt Mariana and uncle Nelson. She also enjoyed watching golf, gymnastics, and the Olympics on TV. When she moved down to Florida, you could always find her tending to her plants and flowers in her beautiful garden. If she wasn’t spending time with family or gardening, you would see her at the store with one of her children.
Gertrudis Casaubon is survived by her children John Casaubon, and Collette Casaubon, son in law Ramon Rodriguez, her grandchildren Jonathan, Christopher, Alex and Ensley, her sisters Fanny Reynoso, Magaly Hernandez as well as her aunt and uncle Mariana and Nelson Maldonado.
