Mrs. Ethel Flora Mitchell Howell, 87, of Frederick, Maryland, and formerly of Tampa, Florida, died on April 7, 2012 in Frederick, Maryland. Born on August 13, 1924 in Wakefield, Rhode Island, she was a daughter of the late Rev. Charles E. Mitchell, Sr. and Josie E. Harrington Mitchell.
She was the wife of the late J O (Joe) Howell. Her husband was in the Navy for 23 years and later worked for the Federal Aviation Agency. They lived all over the United States. She worked for many years as a cashier in military commissaries in Rhode Island, Maryland, Washington, DC, and Tampa, Florida. She also enjoyed traveling throughout the United States and in Europe in her retirement years. Her main interest throughout her life was her family, to whom she was a devoted mother and grandmother.
Mrs. Howell was a member of the Narragansett Baptist Church in Narragansett, Rhode Island for many years. She was most recently a member of Weller United Methodist Church in Thurmont, Maryland.
Surviving are her children, Patricia M. Alexander and husband Henry, and Debra J. Cochran of Thurmont, Maryland and Joe O Howell and wife Maria, of Tampa, FL.Also surviving are one sister, Lillian Pixton and husband William, of Carolina, Rhode Island, sister-in-law Harriet Mitchell, of Zephyrhills, Florida, and sister-in-law Thelma Yarbrough, of Arcadia, Florida. Mrs. Howell also has six grandchildren, Kelly Alexander, of Frederick, Maryland, Scott Alexander and fiancée Carrie Tilley of Portland, Oregon, Wesly Cochran, of Frederick, Maryland, Wendy Cochran Taylor, of Thurmont, Maryland, Brian Howell and wife Mindy, of Tampa Florida, Cristina Howell, of St. Petersburg, Florida and one great-granddaughter, Hazel Howell, of Tampa, Florida. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by a daughter, JoAnn Howell, son-in-law James H. Cochran, a brother, Charles E. Mitchell, Jr., and a sister, Eleanor Johnston.
Funeral services will be conducted by Mrs. Howell’s nephew, Rev. Robert Mitchell, in Tampa, Florida at Gonzalez Funeral Home on Monday April 16, 2012 at 12 Noon with interment to follow at Orange Hill Cemetery in Tampa, FL.
