Brian McEwen, lifelong resident of Tampa, former Director of Champions for Children, passed on March 25, 2018. Brian graduated from Jesuit High School, Vanderbilt University and the University of South Florida where he received his Ph.D. in Philosophy.
To have known Brian was to have loved him. Every person was his friend. Below his ever smiling face was the bow tie that was his trademark. He was the consummate casual individualist. His life was dedicated in service to the disadvantaged and the troubled segments of our lives. Prior to embarking on his career path, Brian detoured into music, performing in Chicago and New York City with close college friends in a group named Smooch. He served on many Boards of Directors serving the Tampa area. While battling a cruel and relentless cancer, Brian continued working to assure an orderly transition.
Brian was the son the late James "Red" McEwen and Louise Roberts McEwen. Brian is survived by his partner in marriage of thirty-seven years, Garland Wayne Mitchell; brother, David (Gloria); nephews, Johnny, Stephen, and Jason; nieces, Julie, Jessica, Melissa and their families; cousins; and a multitude of grieving friends. Brothers, James and John; sister, Carol; and countless beloved dogs predeceased Brian.
Brian's celebration of life which will be held at 11am on Saturday, April 7, 2018 at The Portico, 1001 N Florida Ace, Tampa, FL 33602, casual attire requested.
