Wallace Edward Bell, 83, passed away January 24, 2017 in Tallahassee, FL. He was born in Lutz, FL, attended Lutz School, Sulphur Springs School, and Hillsborough High School in Tampa, FL. He received the degrees BSE in 1956 and MED in 1960 from the University of Florida. After serving two years in the U.S. Army, he began his teaching career at Palmetto Junior-Senior High School in Palmetto, FL. He then taught at Palm Beach Junior College for four years and at Broward Community College for two years before attending The Florida State University to receive his PhD in 1973. He then worked for the Division of Community College in the Florida Department of Education for twelve years before returning to teaching mathematics at Tallahassee Community College and retired from there in 1994. In addition to his love of teaching, he enjoyed traveling and playing bridge.
He was a life-long Christian and was baptized into the Baptist Church at the age of 12. Later he became Presbyterian and for many years was an active member of First Presbyterian Church of Tallahassee. More recently his church home has been the United Church of Tallahassee.
He is survived by his daughter, Elizabeth Lee Bell; his grandson, Charles Michael Ross; his granddaughter, Danielle Marie Ross Fordham; his great grandson, Coleton Ross Fordham; his great granddaughter, Caroline Pinney Fordham, all of Columbia, SC; his sister, Barbara Bell Marin of Idyllwild, CA; several nieces and nephews, several cousins, his long-time partner, Dionne Soto; his close friend, Karen Messer; and many other friends.
He was predeceased by his daughter, Margaret Lynn Bell Ross; his brother, Johnnie L. Bell, Jr.; his sister, Mary Frances Bell Brimmage; his mother, Grace Elizabeth Simmons Cadwell; and his father, Johnnie L. Bell, Sr.
Funeral Services will be held at 4pm Friday, January 27th at Culley’s MeadowWood Funeral Home, 700 Timberlane Road.
