Dr. Randall Garrett Felton, PhD, aged 69, died April 9, 2016 at Tallahassee Memorial Hospital after a brief illness. He was born September 21, 1946 at the Brooklyn Naval Hospital in New York to Katherine Strack and Edward Felton.
As a child in a military family, he was raised in naval stations all over the east coast and Puerto Rico, finally settling in Jacksonville, Florida. A product of Catholic education, he graduated from Bishop Kenny High School in Jacksonville, FL in 1964. He earned his Bachelor of Science and PhD in Social Studies Education from Florida State University in Tallahassee, FL; and his Master of Arts in Teaching at Jacksonville University in Jacksonville, FL. While at FSU for his PhD, he was the recipient of a Hays-Fulbright Scholarship to study in Egypt.
Dr. Felton was the author of textbooks, articles, and other publications. He was an accomplished teacher of middle and high school, both in Jacksonville and Tallahassee. He was Social Studies Supervisor for Florida and Director of Social Studies in Leon County. While director in Leon County, he was responsible for initiating the International Baccalaureate Program at Rickards High School. His highest achievement was becoming the founding principal of John Paul II Catholic High School in Tallahassee, FL. As a product of twelve years of Catholic education, he truly believed in its efficacy for today’s youth and worked tirelessly towards this end. He served on several state and local education committees.
In addition to his educational facet, Dr. Felton was also a naval officer. Entering the Navy as a seaman recruit in 1970, he served in Vietnam and was discharged in 1974. He re-enlisted in the Reserve and rose through the ranks eventually achieving the rank of commander in the United States Naval Reserve. As a supply officer, he "kept the fleet in goods".
He was also a 4th degree Knight of Columbus in the Father Ronn J. Barton Council. And lest we forget, as a hardnosed FSU football fan he successfully ran The Football Pool for nearly 50 years, entertaining hundreds of friends. As a ‘Nole lover he traveled to many out of town games and had great fun. He really loved football season.
He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Renee; his daughters, Julie and Beth (Ben); and his son, Ryan; his grandsons: Nicholas, Logan and Liam. Other survivors include his mother Katherine; his brother Jeff; his nieces, Danielle and Jennifer (Mike); his nephew Douglas; and his great niece, Aubrey.
