Don’t know if anyone will see this, but I just now learned of Jack’s death.

I crossed paths with Jack in 1966 when he was the new defensive backs coach at George Washington University . I was an 18 year old sophomore. We had a special bond. He was a straight forward, honest guy who wanted the best for you as a player. He was also one tough, SOB, thus his nickname, Smilin Jack! 

After the season GWU dropped football. We went our separate ways. Much later I always wondered what happened to Jack. I’m very happy he had the obviously extremely successful career that he had. I have had a wonderful life, also, and Smilin Jack was part of that. I wish I could have told him that about 10 years ago. Hope he would have expected it.

Coach Stanton had a profound impact on me during the one year he was at Bishop Ireton High School in Alexandria,  VA.  My memories of him and our senior year team are many. Here are but a few: Coach was never about himself and he consistently worked us hard to build team and unite us as one unit (all 33 of us) toward success on the field. He prepared us for tough opponents and gave us the good, the bad and the ugly of those who we would encounter on game day so that we could achieve success. He and his coaches were extremely prepared and, in turn, prepared us. Many times our defensive players would yell across the line to the other team and tell them the play they were about to run. This fact was especially true in the TC Williams game when we shut down Hubert "KO" Avery. Coach Stanton always owned his mistakes and held his coaches and us players to that same very high standard - always moving us forward while learning from his and our mistakes in practice and during and after games, making adjustments, and initiating the new game plan. Although I hated the "bear crawls" Coach Stanton and his assistant coaches would dole out as "incentive punishment", I was never afraid of him. In fact, I actually respected how he coached and what he demanded as I practiced and played for him. Looking back, I have even higher regard for Coach Stanton - he taught me how far I could push myself, how hard work pays off, and never to quit even when things are tough. The profound effect Coach Stanton had on me our senior year was not limited to that year; it was life-long.

I will be virtually attending the funeral Mass for Coach tomorrow.  My prayers will be for him, you and your family.

I played for Coach in the Fall of 67 ( 1967 Bishop Ireton Cardinals) l
 had great respect and admiration for him as Coach and Teacher. He was very  tough but fair, loved his family, his teams and coaches.
He will be missed !
He is one of the reasons I spent 41 years in High School Athletics, as a coach and administrator.
Have a safe journey home Coach! Maybe do a bear crawl or run and roll on the way!

Coach Stanton was my position Coach at Wheeling Central Catholic in the mid sixties. He was a great teacher of the game and I learned football and life lessons from him. 
He was demanding but fair and you always knew where you stood with Coach Stanton. Also, who could forget that coaching voice!
He was the "right hand man" to HC Andy Urbanic and in many ways they were joined at the hip.
I will never forget him. 
My sincere condolences to his family.

Dear Mrs. Stanton and  Family, Please  know of my deep condolences on the passing of Coach Stanton.  Coach Stanton was my PE coach at Bishop Ireton high school in Alexandria Virginia 1967/1968. I was a 15-year-old sophomore and even though not on the football team(cross country and track) coach was always interested in how I was doing in school and sports. He gave us much wisdom on always doing your best, working hard and to always remember when we competed that we were representing  not just  our school but our family and our faith. I went to Florida State and reconnected with coach and had several visits during that time. Even though I was never a player or star he always had time. When I think of coach I remember the words of the prophet Micha that says God only wants three things of us. To always do what is right, to show charity to all and to walk humbly with Him. This is how Coach Stanton lived his life and I was truly blessed to have him as a coach and role model in the formative years of my life. Please know that I will pray for the repose of his soul and that our Lord Jesus will fill your sorrow with His holy presence. 

To Ruth and family:  as a former teammate at n.c. state, jack and Ruthie became very close friends and spent to many fun times to mention. We loved Jack and Ruth and our lives were filled wit very good and funny times. Our deepest sympathies to the family and you are all in our prayers. from the mobile home in Cary to the New Years party at my mothers house (drunk as can be). Ruth we loved both of you and the memories together were classic.. you and the family are in our thoughts and prayers. Our memories will last forever.
