John Warren Jacobs, “Buddy” or “Colonel” to those who knew him, passed away on Monday, June 19, 2023, just after 10:00 pm. After two years under Hospice care, and just 18 days before his 90th birthday, he passed away peacefully in his home attended by family.
He graduated from Leon High School in 1952. He briefly attended the Florida State University before being called to serve in the U.S. Army. He served the Army as a military police member at Fort McPherson. After his military service, he came to work for City of Tallahassee and finally for the Florida Department of Transportation where he served until he retired in 2001. During his time with the State of Florida he completed an Associate’s degree in Civil Engineering at Tallahassee Community College, and he ran a secondhand furniture business and eventually trained and became a certified and licensed professional auctioneer in 1989. For some time after his retirement, he continued to work as an auctioneer, donating his services and working to support charitable causes. An organization of particular interest was Habitat for Humanity, through which he helped build 7 houses.
He was preceded in death by his older brother, William F. Jacobs, Jr., and is survived by his wife of 52 years, Jean, brothers David and Earl, daughters Evelyn and Christine, sons Benjamin (wife Sunshine) and Jeffrey (wife Lisa), grandchildren Heather, Daniel, Isabel, Launa, Genevieve, Oliver, Xavier, and Emmett, and great-grandchild Orion.
