I’ve struggled with finding the words to express how much Joan has meant to me over the years. I remember her in high school – pretty, popular, and an awesome point guard.  We were friendly, but it wasn’t until I moved to Tallahassee in 1988 that we became close friends. Those ten “young adult” years that I spent in Tallahassee were some of the best times of my life and is where Joan and I formed a bond of friendship that would last forever. Joan became part of my family. Joan became part of the basic tapestry of my life. Over the years, we became busy with husbands and families and life, but we still carved out time to come together as friends. Those times were precious, and I hold all of those memories close to my heart. 

I have so many happy memories of Joan. So many phone calls, so many visits, so many trips, so many experiences. Joan once used a take on the Beaches movie quote “my memory is long” and said that “our memories are long”. That is so true and I’m so thankful for all of these wonderful memories, as they are a comfort to me now.

I can’t think of Joan without smiling and remembering all of the laughter. We shared so much laughter! And Joan was expressive with it -  I’m sure most of us can attest to a bruise or two if you happened to be close to her while she was laughing. Joan had an extraordinary spirit and she was everyone’s favorite.

I just can’t find all the words to express how much I loved Joan and how much her friendship has meant to me.  She enriched my life and I thank God for her.  My heart has been so heavy since learning of her passing. But I take comfort in knowing that Joan loved the Lord and that she’s with Him now.  And I take comfort in knowing I will see her again.  But I will miss her so much until that time. Over the years, I often told her “miss you much” (Janet Jackson lyrics) when ending a call or text.  I’ll “miss you much”, Joan.  But I’ll see you soon.  Rest in peace dear friend. You will forever be loved and cherished.

My deepest condolences to Joan's family. I only knew her in passing at work but she always had a smile and a kind word. In fact, the last time I saw her shortly before her transition, she left me laughing. I'll miss her presence in the hallways of City Hall. 

I pray her friends and family find strength and comfort during this difficult time.

Joan became a lifelong friend many years ago.  Not only to me, but to my husband and our daughter. 

I keep my circle small, but Joan occupied a large presence in that circle.  There comes a time in every true friendship where you stop being friends, and you become sisters.  Joan was, and will always be, part of my chosen family.  We loved her so much. 

Over the years, we have laughed until we cried, and we have talked about life until we cried.  Since getting the news, I have been flooded with memories, and I seem to recall something new as each day passes.  I’m sure that will continue because Joan will be impossible to forget. 

We traveled together, had countless “girl’s weekends,” and formed a bond that withstood being miles apart.  When she returned to Tallahassee, we were looking forward to getting together again more often.  I know I’ll see her again in heaven, and for that I’m so grateful, but until then, there will be a gaping hole in the get-togethers with our girls.  We’ll always miss her.

Joan left us on my birthday, which explained why it was the first year I didn’t hear her sing to me or call with her silliness and crazy laughter.  She never forgot birthdays.  We’ll never forget her.

One of the first things that came to mind is a bible verse that Joan shared a few times  through the years.  Psalm 46:10 – “Be still, and know that I am God…”  Joan is with God now.  I know she’s smiling, laughing, building bigger pyramids, and undoubtedly watching over all of us.

I was very sad to hear about Joan. I met her several  years ago when she lived in Sarasota and instantly had a connection..she  was a super person and I am happy to have known such a person like her.

I have wonderful memories of Joan.  A lot of time at her apartments in Tallahassee when I was at FSU.  Her family joining my family celebrations thru the years.  Like my mom and dad's 40th wedding anniversary and Rob's 50th birthday celebration.  You all are like extended family.

I knew Joan when I worked in the Planning Department in City Hall with Marlon in the early 90s. She was such a sweet and warm person with a killer smile! So saddened by her passing. Joan was such a fun, loving soul that I had the honor of calling my friend. Although there were many good times shared, my very favorite was when we almost caught the dumpster behind city hall on fire!  We were both pregnant with our first child, and had done a “Draino Test” to determine the gender of our babies (Devin and Rachel) .  We didn’t anticipate how hot the glass jars of our experiment would become- or that they would start smoking.  We quickly threw them in the dumpster at the loading zone and I will NEVER forget watching the smoke come out, or the smell, or how hard we laughed.   Thankfully, the fire department did not have to show up.  Thanks for the memories Joan,  we had some good ones!  We miss you here, but know Heaven gained a fun Angel.

There are special people in our lives who never leave us, even after they are gone.  Joanie will never leave me.  She has been in my life for 45 years.  Joan is the friend that ALWAYS shows up.  She is a light that has shined for me in some of my most difficult times.  Joan has also been there with me through my happiest of accomplishments as well. 
I am struggling with the loss of my friend.  But I find comfort in knowing that Joan had a love for the Lord and knowing that He had her wrapped in His arms as she passed from this life to the next.  Mine & Frank’s thoughts and prayers are with the entire family.  
Eternal rest, grant unto Joan, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon her.  May her soul and all the souls of the faithfully departed, through the mercy of God, Rest In Peace. Amen.

Marlon, We walk through life meeting people. Some, not only touch your heart in a special way, they leave massive footprints on your heart that forever changes you.  Joan indeed was that person.  From the very first time I met Joan, her radiant smile, her warming laugh, and her love for others was left etched in my heart.  Throughout the years, Joan was an example of Christs love to everyone she met.  She was and always will be the light that shines brightly no matter what the circumstances were,  she walked faithfully with the Lord accepting life’s challenges and trials.  She always uplifted you with her smile and joyful heart and put others first before herself.  She was a treasured gift to this world.   Joan’s presence will be missed.  There is no doubt Joan rejoices in the glory that awaited her.  We look forward to seeing her again in the Kingdom of God. Sincere condolences to the family of Joan especially her sons Devon and Matthew.  She was a gracious host welcoming her husband's Bahamian cousins into her home and feeding us much delicious food.  The thing I remember most about Joan is how much she loved to dance.  May she dance with the angels.

Each day on this Earth is a journey.  Joan's journey has ended.  Some might say the journey ended too soon.  God's appointed time for Joan was October 9, 2023.  And while I was not ready for her journey to end, I know that God knows best.  I extend my sincere condolences to her entire family.  Joan brought so much fun and sunshine to my life, especially during my college days.  She was and forever be a lifetime sister and friend.  
      Rest in Eternal Peace my dear sister.  I love you, but God loves you best!

I am so sorry for your loss.  I worked with Joan at the City Attorney's Office until recently, and she was one of the most genuine, joyful, and kind people I have ever met.  I was shocked to hear of her passing, and I hope that the wonderful memories that we all have of her will comfort and sustain you at this time.  Joan was a "real" one - they don't come along very often, and I'm so thankful to call her a friend.
