James “Jim” Thomas Chambers, 80, of Tallahassee, went to be with his Lord and Savior on Tuesday, June 6, 2023. He was a devoted husband, beloved father and grandfather, a veteran of the United States Navy, and a friend to many in the Tallahassee community where he has resided with his family for the past 50 years.
Jim was born on September 24, 1942, to Dwight Herbert Chambers and Nellie Augusta Chambers in Canastota, New York. After graduating from high school, he enlisted in the United States Navy, where he served as a Sonarman, Petty Officer Third Class.
Following his military service, Jim attended the University of Minnesota, where he graduated with his Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology. Jim then worked as a pilot and flight instructor and later flew air mail for the United States Postal Service (USPS). Jim retired from federal government service after 36 years in 2010.
Jim is survived by his wife of 50 years, Jan Chambers; daughter Kristin (Keith) Lumbert of Winston-Salem, N.C.; two sons, Jared (Jane) Chambers and Blake (Ashley) Chambers of Tallahassee; four grandchildren, Makenzie and Tristan Lumbert and Marshall and Olivia Chambers; and a brother, Bob (Wendy) Chambers of Statesboro, GA, along with their children and grandchildren.
Jim was a humble and faithful servant to Jesus Christ and was active in his local church for many years. He enjoyed being outdoors and tinkering with motors and gadgets, but sailing with his children was one of his greatest passions.
Services will be held at Tallahassee National Cemetery on Wednesday, July 12 at 10:00 a.m.
