Elmo was born in Decatur, Ga. He graduated from Tech High School in Atlanta. Elmo enlisted in the Navy in 1939. He was one of the "humble heroes" who served his country on the USS Nashville, a ship that earned 10 battle stars during World II serving from the North Atlantic to the South Pacific. Elmo received a war-time commission as a Chief Warrant Officer.
After his honorable discharge in 1945 he worked as an Engineer with Atlantic Munford Refrigeration Services retiring in 1985 after 40 years of service. Elmo and his wife, the late, Carrie Lee Brown, moved to Tallahassee in 1999. He was honored on Independence Day celebrations, as the oldest WWII veteran living in the Southwood community for the three years, 2008-10.
In Atlanta Elmo was a member of Grace United Methodist Church and president of the Lion's club. He is currently a charter member of Good Samaritan United Methodist Church in Tallahassee and a former local lay speaker.
Elmo is survived by his daughter Susette Crosby (husband Jim); grandchildren: Melissa Levin of Orlando; Gregory Levin of Raleigh, NC; Corey Wilder of Boca Raton; Austin Crosby of Buford, Ga; Clint Crosby (wife Holly and great granddaughter Quinn) of Tallahassee.
Elmo was a warm-hearted, compassionate man who never refused a friend in need. He was a faithful husband to Lee for 63 years. The lives he touched were enriched by his kindness and will store up and treasure their memories of him.
Funeral service for Elmo E. Brown will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Culley's MeadowWood Funeral Home (850-877-8191), 1737 Riggins Road, where family will receive friends on Wednesday, 6-8 p.m. Interment will be at Culley's Meadowood Memorial Park, Timberlane Rd. The family requests that in lieu of flowers donations be made to The Tallahassee Alzheimer's Project.
