A native of New Hampshire, Ed called Florida home for over 50 years. After finishing high school in Candia, NH, he went to Dartmouth College, graduating in 1965. He went to Indiana University-Bloomington where he received his MA and PhD in 1967 and 1970 in history. He was hired at Florida State that same year, where he stayed until his retirement in 2015. He was an expert on Eastern European history, especially Poland. He wrote five books and over thirty articles on the subject. One of Ed’s greatest accomplishments was helping to found the United Faculty of Florida, the faculty union. He was also the faculty advisor to Chi Omega.
Ed had many other interests besides history. If the weather was good, you could find him on the lakes or rivers fishing. He loved football, having played in high school and college, and loved watching FSU play, as well as his beloved Jacksonville Jaguars. He also enjoyed watching basketball and hockey, and was a coach for his children’s basketball teams when they were younger. He was actively involved with competitive pistol shooting through the Florida Peace Officers Association, the NRA, and the Tallahassee Rifle and Pistol Club, a hobby that he shared with his son Greg.
A life-long Boy Scout and Eagle Scout, he enjoyed instilling his love of scouting and outdoors activities with his son Greg (another Eagle Scout) and grandsons (future Eagle Scouts).
Ed is survived by his daughter Jennifer Garza (James) of Lincoln, NE; his son, Gregory Wynot (Callie) of Jacksonville, FL; grandsons, Peter Wynot, Evan Wynot, and Andrew Wynot; granddaughters, Katherine Garza and Deborah Garza; his nephew, Andrew Wynot and his great-niece, Ava. His wife, Colleen shared 9 wonderful years with him, and their love was unparalleled.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Edward Sr. and Eugenia Wynot; his brother, Peter Wynot; his sister, Susan Wynot, and his first wife, Kathy.
