Dillon was born on July 14, 1988 to Catherine (Smith) Wilt and Edward Smith. After graduating from Leon County Public Schools, Dillon worked as an Apprentice Electrician with Coltin Electric for several years before pursuing a law enforcement career by graduating from the Pat Thomas Law Enforcement Academy in 2012. After academy graduation, Dillon began his law enforcement employment at the Tallahassee Community College Police Department as a police officer. In 2013, Dillon gained employment with the Capitol Police Department, where he performed uniformed duties and was a long-time member of their SWAT Team. In 2018, Dillon was hired as a deputy sheriff with the Leon County Sheriff’s Office, and served with distinction until his untimely death on March 14th.
Dillon loved the outdoors, and enjoyed fishing, hunting, traveling, and being with family and friends, and especially spending time with his son, Colt. An avid fitness buff, working out was a part of his daily routine, and he also enjoyed his time on the firearms range. Dillon had a talent for working with his hands, building and repairing various things, and he was especially skilled in hand-crafting keepsake items – such as jewelry, knives, and polyresin creations – for family members.
Dillon is preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Magda and Joseph German of Tallahassee and his paternal grandfather, Hollis Smith of Pensacola.
Dillon is survived by his son, Colt Dillon Smith (and his mother, Jessica Jolly), Dillon’s mother, Catherine (Smith) Wilt and her husband, Benzy Wilt, his father, Edward Smith and his wife, Ramsi Smith, siblings Alexandra Smith, Connor Smith, Hunter Kerce and Wren Clark, and their spouses and children.
