Carol Lee was born on December 25, 1951 in Franklin, IN to Margaret and Bobby Bowman. She spent her public school years in Whiteland, IN, and graduated from Whiteland Community High School in 1970. She went on to received her Bachelor of Music Education from the Indiana University with a major in Voice. After graduation in 1974, she accepted a teaching position in Miami, FL, with the Miami-Dade Public School system. Her teaching experience included thirty-three years (1974-2006) teaching elementary, middle school, and high school students. While teaching, she also took time to obtain her Master of Music degree in 1993 from the University of Miami, Miami, FL. During her teaching career she was a member of numerous Florida music educator conferences and associations and directed student chorus performances throughout Miami-Dade and Florida during that time. Her most prestigious performance was her directing the Miami Girl Choir during Pope John Paul’s visit to Miami, FL in the late 1980s. Although her teaching career brought great joy and satisfaction, she and her husband both retired from their professions in 2006 and moved to Tallahassee, FL to be near their son.
Carol, who was single when she moved to Miami for her teaching career, met her husband (Dennis Lee) in a young adult church group and they were married in Coral Gables United Methodist Church on March 31, 1978. They had just celebrated 44 years of marriage. They had a son, Kevin Lee, who was born in 1984.
Outside of her school profession, Carol loved to travel which she did with her husband and son throughout their marriage. She was active in church choirs in both Miami and Tallahassee, often assisting the directors of the choirs when they were absent. During retirement, she joined the Tallahassee Women’s Retirement Club which kept her busy socially and for a while became the director of the group’s women’s chorus, the Music Makers. She enjoyed the directing and the teaching of the women of Music Makers, as well as the scheduled performances at various retirement and assisted living facilities in Tallahassee throughout the years.
A memorial service is scheduled for May 28 at Saint Paul’s United Methodist Church at 11:00 am with a reception to follow at the church’s social hall on the premises. In lieu of flowers, please send donations in her honor to a charity of your choice or the Alzheimer’s Association.
