Byron Barclay Block

Byron B. Block passed away peacefully at his home on November 30, 2024 in Tallahassee, Florida with his devoted wife, Pam and beloved pet dog, Millie by his side. The son of Al and Evelyn Block and grandson of Sam and Fannye Rosenberg, Byron was best known as a corporate attorney and prominent developer in Tallahassee, Florida. His development projects were aesthetically pleasing, meticulously designed and environmentally friendly. Byron believed in community and giving back and considered this to be an important responsibility. Byron supported many institutions, including Temple Israel, Hillel at FSU, the Tallahassee Jewish Federation, LeMoyne Arts and Duke University, particularly its medical programs. As a developer in Tallahassee, Byron worked with many professionals. He was always generous with his time, particularly when it came to mentoring young professionals in the industry. Byron was truly a model when it came to commitment to family, his community and the legal profession. His actions evidenced a strong commitment to philanthropy and to Tikkun Olam as his generosity truly made our community a better place.

Byron was born in 1937. He attended public schools in Tallahassee, including Sealy and Leon High School. Byron was active in scouting, having attained the rank of Eagle Scout. He attended the World Jamboree in Bad Ischl, Austria in 1951. He attended and graduated from Duke University, the University of Florida Law School and New York University Graduate Tax School. Byron began his career practicing law in Jacksonville, Florida with the firm of Glickstein, Crenshaw, and Glickstein, which represented large publicly held corporations and local businesses. In 1979, Byron and Arnold Scott, another partner in the firm, opened their own law firm in downtown Jacksonville. He continued his practice until 1986 when he returned home to Tallahassee to start his own law practice.

After several years of practicing law in Tallahassee, Byron assumed responsibility for the management of Block Land & Finance Company, Ltd., a partnership originally formed by Byron's parents, Al and Evelyn Block. During his management, the partnership owned approximately 2,000 acres of land in different areas of Tallahassee and other parts of Florida. Byron excelled in development, creating such neighborhoods and mixed-use development projects as Benjamin’s Run, Bull Run, Countryside, Easton Glen, The Enclave, The Hermitage, The Ravines and Swift Creek Woods.

Byron was a military history buff, a consummate storyteller, and dog lover. He was a car aficionado and thrilled his friends and family with rides in his Porsches and Audis. He enjoyed and appreciated the arts, travel and fine food. He had a witty and dry sense of humor. Byron was truly a renaissance man.

He is survived by his wife Pam, daughters Jennifer and Hilary, granddaughter Helena and golden doodle Millie. We will miss him dearly.

A funeral service for Byron will be held Tuesday, December 3, 2024 at 12:00 PM at Temple Israel, 2215 Mahan Dr, Tallahassee, FL 32308.

In lieu of flowers the family has asked that donations be made to Temple Israel.
