Bryce Clayton Thornton,of Tallahassee, Florida died December 15, 2024 at the age of 99 years, just shy of his 100th birthday. Born February 6, 1925 in Chillicothe, Ohio to father Melvin Leroy Thornton and mother Cora Priscilla Fout. Bryce was a private in the US Army during WWII as a demolition expert from 1943-1944 liberating many cities along his journey and after the war returning to the states, Bryce worked for his father and his painting and contracting business until 1957 where he then went to work, after his father's death, for the bureau of prisons. He married Helen Louella Cottrell March 21st, 1954. Bryce and Helen had three children, Michael, Melodie, and Michelle. Michael married wife Cathy, having two children. Melodie having one child. During this time Bryce participated in umpiring football, basketball, and baseball games for many leagues in California, Ohio, Kentucky, and Florida ranging from jr high to AAA teams and colleges. He was an active member in the local VFW and Elks lodge and a true social butterfly. You always got a “Hello sweetie” or “Hi young man” with a hug or a hand shake. The community has truly lost a great man and an awesome spokesperson for what kindness truly is. He will wholesomely be missed.
He is survived by two children, Michael Allan Thornton and Melodie Lee Strickland, three grandchildren, Kelley (husband Wayne), Scott (wife Paula) and Casey. Five great grandchildren, Darian, Marcel, Jaydon, Andrew, Skye, and one great, great grandchild, Lorelei.
A public visitation for Bryce will be held Friday, December 27, 2024 from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Culley's MeadowWood Funeral Home, 700 Timberlane Road, Tallahassee, Florida 32312. A funeral service will occur Saturday, December 28, 2024 from 11:00 AM to 12:00 PM, 700 Timberlane Road, Tallahassee, Florida 32312. A burial with military honors will occur Saturday, December 28, 2024 from 12:00 PM to 12:30 PM at Culley's MeadowWood Memorial Park, 700 Timberlane Road, Tallahassee, Florida 32312. A celebration reception following the burial will occur Saturday, December 28, 2024.
