Edna Kay (Dew) Jones was born on September 12, 1954 in Tahlequah, OK to parents Reverend Sanders Dew and Mary Jane (Dry) Dew. She was the third of nine children, which included two brothers and six sisters.
Edna attended several schools in the area including Mesena, Black Gum, and Oaks Mission before obtaining her GED and then going on to study at Flaming Rainbow and earning several certificates while attending ICTC Tahlequah.
Edna was employed with the Cherokee Nation for 24 years. She was a First Language Cherokee Speaker and a certified Cherokee language instructor. In 2002, Edna married Bearl Jones, Jr. Edna was a talented basket weaver, her turtle baskets were always in high demand. When she wasn’t working, she enjoyed reading all kinds of books. Edna was working on an autobiography, and aspired to be a published author. She would never miss a chance to watch the Texas Rangers play ball, “even though they never win”, she would say. Her most favorite thing, though, was spending time with her family. She loved going out and traveling and taking short weekend trips with her daughter and grandkids. Edna was a member of Elm Tree Baptist Church and enjoyed participating in activities there as much as she was able to. Edna was friendly and ready to help people in any way she could. She liked to tease and possessed a wonderful sense of humor.
Edna was preceded in death by her parents, two sisters Geneva Dew and Marilyn Dew, one brother, Kenneth Dew, and two nephews, Zayne Dew and Christopher VanBuskirk.
Edna is survived by her husband, Bearl Jones of Lawton, OK; her daughter, Stephanie Alonso and husband Hugo Cesar of Tahlequah; grandchildren, Jayden, Jayleigh, Jayson, and Jaylah Alonso; sister Wanda Sanders of Tahlequah, OK; sister Minnie Dew of Tahlequah; brother Elvis Dew and wife Debbie; sister Kathy VanBuskirk and husband Perry of Tahlequah, OK; sister Jackie Clayton and husband Robert of Tahlequah, OK.
