Wayne Gandy

Faith, Family, Fishing, Football (Auburn). We can’t sum up his life in four words, or a 3 minute video of pictures from his life, but to those who new him he meant something much more meaningful and unique depending on how well you new him.  He was just here??? Napping on my recliner, sitting at our table reading the Bible or some sports related biography. He loved to watch faith based sports movies. He mumbled more and more as he aged and couldn’t hear as well. There were a lot of “huh’s” and “what”. I’m thankful for the time I had with him. Watching football, fishing, beach trips, family gatherings, and all the “little things we do in life that seem meaningless, but turn out to be cherished moments and memories when put in perspective. He prayed before eating, and went to church every chance he had. Just like the rest of us he struggled and suffered through life’s ups and downs while maintaining hope in something better. He always did our laundry and dishes when he stayed with us, even though he put a lot of things in the wrong places, we still appreciated it and new it came from love. I’ll never forget his laugh   and how he loved to pester. He was there when you needed him and willing to help any way he could. The little, ordinary daily things that happen between the “big things” seem to matter most. He was a people person who seemed at home everywhere he went. He connected with people and wanted to know them. Tawnya keeps saying, “I can’t believe he’s gone”, and that her heart is broken and it feels like there’s a hole in it. This is Love...It was an honor and privilege to be his son in law and his memory will live in each of our hearts for the rest of our days. 

Tawnya...YES! I was a freshman in college on my way to school with a car load of friends when I heard this poor man singing this pitiful version of “Hangin’ Tough”. We were laughing so hard. We were thinking, bless his heart...they better give it to him. Then, he said his name and I was screaming!!! The whole car erupted with laughter!

I remember when I was in 3rd grade and in the middle of class, I got called to the office. There was Uncle Wayne. He had talked my mama into letting me check out to come spend the weekend with you. I had never been so excited.

And oh gracious, the ribbing and aggravating about Alabama and Auburn. My mama just told me he was gonna text me last week because I told her to tell him Auburn got beat twice at Bryant Denny last month. I know he was gonna let me have it.  If Uncle Wayne was around, there was always laughter. That was a guarantee.

Here were his loves that he always talked about and in this order and how he described them: his loving God, his beautiful wife and daughter, his wonderful and smart grandchildren, fishing, Auburn football and Childersburg...he loved his city. And Pam Huff. That nut loved him some ABC 33/40 Pam Huff. He can still put a smile on my face. 

Aunt Anita and Tawnya...we love y’all.

I was a freshman in Highschool. Back then, I was in love with the boy band, New Kids On The Block. I had two walls covered from top to bottom of their posters.   One morning, before school, I was getting ready and listening to the radio. NKOTB was coming to Birmingham for a concert. The radio station was having a contest to win 2 tickets. Parents had to call in and sing one of their songs. I started jumping up and down!  I woke  my daddy up and begged him to call in and sing a song. Now, daddy couldn’t carry a tune🤣🤣🤣.  Back then, we listened to songs on cassette tapes.  I pulled out the insert that had the lyrics on it and gave it to daddy. He called in with that insert in his hand reading and attempting to sing it in a monotone voice and no rhythm. He sang the song, Hangin Tough. I can hear him now in a monotone singing voice 🎼🎼”Hangin Tough,  Woooaaah oooh oooh HanginTough”. 🎼🎼It was hilarious!  I was rolling laughing in the background trying to sing it with him!  Bless him. Needless to say he won my 2 tickets to their concert. When I got to school, Everyone was like I heard your daddy on the radio station. My cousin, Sabrina, heard it in Birmingham and screamed “That’s my Uncle Wayne.”  We still laugh about it today. ❤️❤️🤣🤣🤣. He would do anything for me. I was the light of his life!!!And he was my best friend!!!❤️❤️💔💔

We were sooo much alike!  Sometimes that was good and sometimes it was a challenge. We butted heads because we both were so stubborn. I get it honest. It’s that ‘Gandy’ gene!  We both loved to eat divinity candy at Christmas time. Fried green tomatoes was our favorite and of course Chicken wings!  We both could make them so good. Your peanut butter cookies are one of my faves. We also loved the same movies. One of our favorites was CAN’T BUY ME LOVE!  We had it on a VHS. When I was in Highschool, we would watch it all of the time. Neither one of us could carry a tune. But, we sang it. I can hear us now...🎼Can’t buy meeee looooove, no no no ooooooh🎼🎼🎼🤣🤣🤣🤣

Daddy,  I am so heartbroken. I miss you so much!!!😭😭😭💔💔💔. I know you are in a better place. Fishing with the angels. I know you are up There aggravating  granny Lois just like you always use to do. You use to tickle her feet til she would pee on herself🤣🤣🤣. I can hear her now “Sh— Nita, come get Wayne!  WAYNE WAYNE STOP IT🤣🤣🤣” Laughing the whole time...“

I’m having a wonderful memory of camping at Winn Creek in Alex City . A whole bunch of us went & we had Masie , Chris & the kids & Gran stay in our camper . Me & Howdy & aunt Anita & uncle Wayne slept in our own tents ⛺️ with air mattresses . Howdy even had me a tv & I could watch Lifetime movies in our tent . Uncle  Wayne  & aunt Anitas tent was right beside ours & we were all together 🎣 !!  We had the time of our life’s that few days . Bubba , Tanya & the kids , momma & Daddy & several came to eat a few times. It was only one of our camping excursions & fishing 🎣. I’m also thinking about a night me , Howdy , uncle  Wayne & aunt Anita went night  fishing under the bridge in Alex City somewhere . We had so much fun until us girls both had to go to the bathroom. Needless to say uncle Wayne meant he wasn’t gonna stop & take us to a bank somewhere . He kept telling us we just had to pee pee off the side of the boat . He said he wasn’t taking us again to the bank , Howdy was on our side or at least he acted like he was . We ended up having to be be dumped out like two sacks of old potato’s where we put in at . I promise you we had to stay there until they stopped  fishing for hours in a strange place at night because he wouldn’t stop 🛑 fishing to come back to get us . Me & aunt Anita wanted to kill him for a few hours but it all turned into a fun memory. I promise you uncle Wayne was very serious about his fishing 🎣. We never went night fishing with those two again I promise you that 😂🎣 !!  The memory is one I’ve treasured though for years & me & aunt Anita just set in the truck & couldn’t believe we’d been just plain out deserted for hours . After our madness passed we just laughed & talked until those  two got to tired to fish 🐠 any longer !! 

Just some pics I wanted to share with you all of Uncle Wayne that I had taken at get togethers man we loved him so.. he was such a awesome beautiful soul and he will be greatly missed by us all we love yall!!!  You know bug and him was dancing it up she loves to dance 💃
