Sylacauga, AL - Thelma M. Evans, 97, of Sylacauga, Alabama, passed away on Monday, January 3, 2022 at Coosa Valley Medical Center. She was the loving wife of Charles W. (Bill) Evans. Together they shared 67 years of marriage before his passing in 2014.
Born October 11, 1924, in Dundas, Ohio, Thelma grew up in Coosa County, Alabama. She was a daughter of the late Benjamin Oliver and Genie Meherg.
She graduated from Weogufka High School, followed by a bachelors degree from Auburn University, and a masters degree from the University of South Florida. She worked as a lab technician in Zanesville, Ohio. She taught science and Elementary school in Elkhorn and Crumpler, West Virginia. In Florida she taught elementary school and became an assistant principal. They retired to Sylacauga in 2000, where she enjoyed painting, basket weaving, and gardening.
She was an active member of Grimes Chapel Baptist Church and enjoyed teaching adult Sunday School. The BB Comer Memorial Library was dear to her heart, especially the Brown Bag Series. The annual Marble Festival was a special thrill, and she took great joy and pride in the Bill and Thelma Evans Marble Gallery at the library.
She is survived by her sister, Glois M. Jones of Durham, North Carolina. Also 2 children, Paula E. Woodman and her husband Adriel of Parker, Colorado, and Charles R Evans and his wife Hattie of Glenville, Pennsylvania, 6 grandchildren, and 8 great-grandchildren.
In addition to her parents and husband, Thelma was preceded in death by her brother, Jess Willard Meherg.
A memorial service will be held at Radney-Smith Funeral Home in Sylacauga on Friday, January 14, 2022, at 10:00 a.m. followed by interment at Evergreen Memorial Cemetery in Sylacauga. Family and friends are invited to a luncheon at Grimes Chapel Baptist Church. There will be a viewing on Thursday, January 13 from 5:00-8:00 p.m. At Radney-Smith.
