James is survived by his wife of 52 years, Betty Joyce Houston; his son Wade Houston (Angie); his brothers Junior Houston, Bobby Houston, Gary Houston (Mary Ann), Wendell Houston (Sherry), and David Houston (Penny); his sister Virginia Walker; his grandchild Mason Houston, his step-grandchildren Austin Ledford and Ruthie Ledford.

James was preceded in death by his father Elijah Houston and his mother Mary New Houston; his sisters Shirley Hurt and Marie Smith.

A visitation for James will be held Tuesday, September 5, 2023 from 12:00 PM to 2:00 PM at Radney-Smith Funeral Home, 320 North Elm Avenue, Sylacauga, Alabama 35150, followed by a funeral service at 2:00 PM with Bro. Mike Dankson and Bro. Wayne McDaniel officiating.

James will be laid to rest in Greenhill Memorial Gardens, 7447 Old Sylacauga Hwy, Childersburg, AL 35044.

Serving as pallbearers are Mason Houston, Mike McGinnis, Lamar Houston, Kenny Williamson, Rodney Bryant, Austin Ledford. Roger Houston, Stan White and Tab Groggins will serve as honorary pallbearers.
