On October 5, 1929, Theresa, only daughter and middle child of Andrew and Jessie (Gillis) Bennett, was born in North Sydney, NS. Theresa was only two years old when her mother died from tuberculosis. Her father was a Merchant who owned and operated restaurants in North Sydney, a corner store in Northside East Bay, and a canteen on the East Bay Sandbar. After her mother’s death, her grandparents, Angus and Elizabeth Gillis, Beechmont , co-parented her and her brothers William “Billy” and Cecil. At the age of 16, she met the love of her life, Angus Joe. They married two years later in 1947, had 13 children and throughout their 69 years of marriage they shared many joys and sorrows. Their deep faith and commitment to each other only grew stronger. They lived in MacAdam Lake, until 1969, when they moved to East Bay. They loved Celtic music, tuned into Donnie Campbell's show on Sunday night and attended many square dances. Theresa was a member of the Catholic Womens’ League of St. Mary Parish, East Bay for over 50 years. Theresa loved being a domestic engineer and was a great cook, baker, and the epitome of hospitality. The welcome mat was always open to unexpected company with a nice meal and a cup of tea. She was loved and respected by young and old alike. It goes without saying that she was a very caring person. Besides raising her own family, she took care of her grandparents, her father and Uncle Mickey Gillis, in their golden years. In November of 2014, Angus went to the veterans’ wing of Taigh Na Mara in Glace Bay. As they were inseparable, rarely did you see one without the other. Mom made the decision to move to Miners Lane, Harbourstone Enhanced Care in March of 2015, and dad joined her two days later.
