It is with deep regret that we, the sisters of the Congregation of Notre Dame, announce the passing of Sr. Mary Edna Levangie on March 18, 2022 at the CND Healthcare Center in Sydney.
Sr. Mary Edna was born in New Glasgow on May 5, 1919, the daughter of the late Alfred and Rose (Decoste) Levangie. At the early age of 12 Mary Edna made a promise to become a religious, and that promise remained alive in her. She honoured that promise in 1937 when she entered the Congregation of Notre Dame and was professed in 1940.
Sr. Mary Edna began her teaching career in Mabou in 1940 and continued teaching in various communities in Nova Scotia, including New Glasgow, Inverness, Larry’s River and New Victoria. She spent her years in the education of young students where she carefully laid the ground work for their future learning. She continued as a reading specialist and was able to help so many children experiencing difficulties. When it was time to retire from the school system her missionary spirit carried her to the west, Drayton Valley and Innisfail, where for several years she gave of herself in pastoral ministry and ministry to those in need.
In 1994 she returned home and continued her ministry among the elderly in Sydney Mines, Holy Redeemer Convent and at Parkland, Sydney. In 2018 she was welcomed at the CND Healthcare Center. Sr. Mary Edna is the last surviving member of her immediate family. She was predeceased by her sisters, Mary Jane (Lloyd) Gerrior, Marjorie (George) Wilson, Hazel and Grace. She is survived by her loving nieces and nephews, who affectionately knew her as Aunt Mae. Before pronouncing her first vows, Sr. Mary Edna wrote “May our Blessed Mother ever guard and keep me faithful to the promise of my religious profession and a worthy member of her own Congregation.” Sr. Mary Edna lived that faithfulness throughout a long life of serving God and God’s people.
