The family of John Samuel Pope announces his passing Sunday March 31st, 2019, at The Cove Guest Home, Sydney, Nova Scotia, where he was comforted and cared for so well over these past four and a half years. Born in Louisbourg, N.S. on June 12th, 1933, he was the only son of the late John (Jack) Pope, and Jane Helen (Lathigee) Pope.
John is survived by his wife of 49 years, Lynne (Atchison) Pope, his son Christopher Pope, (Nicole), Sydney, his daughter Jennifer Pope,(Timothy), Brookfield, MA. and his six precious grandchildren, of whom he lovingly referred to as his butterflies; Tessa, Taylynne, Emily, Katy, Stephen, and Sara. His sister, Doreen Bzdell (Wally) Nanaimo, B.C., nephew Wally Jr., Bzdell (Lisa) Scotia, NY, niece, Barbara Bzdell, Yelm, WA and nephew John Alphonse, Halifax, NS. along with extended family on Lynne’s side.
John was predeceased by his sister, Molly Alphonse, Halifax, NS.
In John’s youth, boxing was his sport of choice, he was a Golden Gloves boxer. John also loved to travel, and he and Lynne, enjoyed many wonderful trips throughout their many years of marriage.
For 60 years, John operated his own successful Land Survey business, retiring in 2012 due to his failing health, however his heart will always be on the trap line.
John was actively involved with the Navy League of Canada and sat on several Boards of Directors; VON, YMCA, NSSA, S&L Railway, and others. He was instrumental in revitalizing youth and adult sailing at the Royal Cape Breton Yacht Club on Sydney Harbour, as well as the conception of the Canadian Land Surveyors Association. It was the “ Canadian Council of Land Surveyors” that was inspired by John.
For the most part, John lived on his own terms, so keeping with his wishes there will be no visitation or funeral service. Cremation has taken place under the direction of TW Curry Parkview Chapel, Sydney, NS.
A private family burial will take place at a later date.
