It is with deep sadness that we announce the death of our father, husband, brother and friend, John Stephen Mortimer, age 58 on Saturday, October 31, 2020 at the An Cala Palliative Care Unit, Cape Breton Regional Hospital, after a long and courageous battle with cancer, surrounded by his family. The angels in this unit were invaluable to his family and him during this difficult time.
John grew up in the Ashby area. He received his Bachelors of Community Studies degree from the University of Cape Breton, where he met the love of his life Brenda. John worked for the Department of Community Services for 30 years where he made many lifelong friendships. He was a volunteer for many years with Big Brothers Big Sisters and many other organizations too numerous to list. John and Brenda spent many years sharing their bungalow in Benacadie with the MacLennan family and friends.
His talents and passion for cooking were where he expressed his love and caring personality with everyone he met. To share a meal with John and his family was a blessing. He was a devoted Pittsburg Steelers fan and was blessed with the skills to be successful at whatever he attempted from carpentry to outdoor pizza ovens. John was a proud board member on the executive of NSGEU. He had a strong faith and attended mass daily until the Co-Vid pandemic. He received much support from his numerous friends in faith.
John was predeceased by his father Sidney Mortimer 2002 and his mother A. Cecilia (Hickey) Mortimer 2012.
He will be dearly missed by his beautiful wife Brenda (Briggs) Mortimer and his 3 children, Brian, David (Emily-Jane), Sarah (Brett) and his grand-dog, Penny. He is also survived by his 4 siblings George, Bruce (Charlotte), Shelia (Kevin) Cooke, Donna (Terry) Keough and by his sisters-in-law Charlene (Darren) MacEachern, Christina Briggs and his mother-in-law Mary Briggs as well as nieces, nephews and other relatives. He also will be missed by the young people that he opened his home to, he considered them a part of his family.
A funeral mass will be celebrated at 11:00 am on Tuesday, November 3 at St. Theresa’s Church with Fr. Dennis Lamey officiating. Interment in St. Barra’s Cemetery, Christmas Island. Livestream will start at 11am on Tuesday. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the Palliative Care Unit at Cape Breton Regional Hospital.
