James Alexander Campbell, 87 of Sydney, passed away Thursday, June 20, 2013, in the palliative care unit of the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney, with his family by his side. Born in Sydney, he was the son of the late James A. and Elizabeth (MacPhee) Campbell.
James was employed by Sydney Steel Corp. for 25 years and prior to that Crowells Department Store and Agnew Surpass. Early in his life he was an active member of the Knights of Columbus. "Gramps" as his grandchildren called him enjoyed gardening and sports and was an excellent cook. James was fond of the outdoors and spent many days on the Bras d’ Or Lakes with his son and family.
James is survived by son James “Jim” (JoAnn) Campbell of Northside East Bay, a brother, Vincent (Madeline) Waverly, N.S. He is also survived by his beloved grandchildren, Dayna, Sydney, Laura( Dave Dudka), Halifax, Jamie (David Egret), France, David (Courtney), Calgary, Denis, Sydney, Samantha, Regina, Lindsay, Ontario; step-granddaughter Chrystal; great grandson Conlan James; great granddaughter, Kinley and daughter-in-law Arlene Humby.
James was predeceased by his infant son David and son, Gary Vincent; his brother, George (Terry Sampson), and sister Margaret (Leon Lantz).
Visitation for the late James Campbell will be held on Sunday, June 23 from 2-4 and 7-9 at T. W. Curry Parkview Chapel. Funeral mass will be celebrated at 2:30 p.m. Monday, June 24 at St. Mary’s Church, East Bay with Fr. Frank Abbass officiating. Interment will be in Resurrection Cemetery.
