Born in Port Hood, he was one of 12 children born to the late Edward and Mae (MacKinnon) MacQuarrie. Greg grew up in New Waterford and moved to Montreal where he met his wife Mary Morrison.
He is survived by Mary as well as children, Virginia (Derek Stapleton), Susan, Sandra (Glenn) Keefe, and Stephen. Dear Papa to Ami, Shelby, Matthew, Adam, Alex and Laken. Greg is also survived by sisters Mary MacLean, Scotchtown, Margaret (Jim) Egan, Carver, Mass., Anna (Gerry O'Quinn), Timberlea, and Kaye, Willena, and Sadie, all of New Waterford. Brothers surviving are Don, Calgary and Tom (Yvonne), Winnipeg. Greg is survived by sister-in-law Barbara (Bernie) Rheault, Chateauguay, QC, and sisters-in-law Dodie MacQuarrie, New Waterford, Carole MacQuarrie, Mississauga, ON, and brother-in-law Russell Brown, Caledon, ON. He is also proud uncle to many nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by brothers John and Eddie, and sister Bernice Brown. Greg was also predeceased by nephews David Brown and Michael Rheault.
Dad was immensely proud of his grandchildren, and got his greatest joy from family gatherings, both big and small. Dad had served as a volunteer to Meals on Wheels in Sydney as well as part-time treasurer for the Mira Senior’s Center. He retired from Devco in 1997 after 26 years. Dad was also a devoted Canadiens and Expos fan, and would take on all debates on the merits of his teams.
Visitation will be on Friday, Feb 11 from 2-4and 7-9 at T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel, George St. Sydney. Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Saturday, Feb 12 at 10 am at St. Joseph's Church, Father Conrad Edwards officiating. Reception to follow in the church. Family flowers only please, but donations to the Canadian Diabetes Association would be greatly appreciated.
