We the family, announce with sadness in our hearts, the passing of our beloved, brother, uncle, father, grandfather and friend Gerry Stevens, on April 29th at home surrounded by love. Born March 14, 1961, he was the son of the late Benedict and Margaret (Denny) Stevens.
Gerry was a hard working father and a real people person. He loved to meet people and chat at Pow Wows, community events and at the Sequoia's Café. He was a wonderful cook and he got to put his skills on display during his time there. Gerry loved to sing and play guitar, especially country music and he was also very active enjoying frequent walks and hikes as well as cycling and riding his motorcycle. He was also a great pool player. Being 35 years sober, AA was very important to Gerry and he supported the program and his peers through their own struggles. Gerry was also very proud of his Mi’kmaq heritage, he was a huge supporter of the Mi’kmaq language and culture, but most importantly he was proud of his work as a father and grandfather. He adored his family and especially enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren. He even hid his illness from his family members who were away on vacation so that they could spend their time enjoying their trip rather than worrying about him. He has undoubtedly left his mark on not only his family but his community and he will be greatly missed by all those who knew him.
Gerry is survived by his children; Kateri (Antle), Lucia, Boyd (Grace) and Kalolin, his grandchildren; Kodan, Keondre, Sequoia, Roston, Harlynn, Cassius, Adelyn and Kylo. Also left to mourn his passing are his siblings; Angela, Rhodena, Robert (Audrey), Elizabeth, Beverly and Darren (Gail) as well as his special aunt Virginia, nephew Richard and god children Kelly and Dexter. He is also survived by sisters-in-law Jennie and Arlene.
Aside from his parents, Gerry is predeceased by his son Nathan, grandchild Hailee, siblings; Clifford, Arnold, Beverly Ann, Marcia, Sheila, Kevin, Spencer and Shirley. Gerry is also predeceased by his godparents Antle and Dorothy Stevens.
A sacred fire will be lit a day before the wake begins in Gerry’s honor. The visitation will begin on Monday, May 8th, after 7pm at his home, 9 Kji Saqmaw Crt in Membertou. A traditional Mi’kmaq service will be held graveside on Wednesday. May 10th at 10am in Membertou Memorial Gardens. To share memories and condolences please visit www.twcurry.com.
